I get that this is supposed to show how A.I. can be used as a tool to make work lighter to japanese animators, they do need to work less or at least get paid more, but this is NOT the way.

This is devoid of any humanity (LOL) it just looks bad and soulless, if this is useful for anything is showin the big corporations they can just not hire animators and use A.I. to ''''''animate''''''. less workers more money, you all are so innocent to think they'd use this to benefit the workers, in this case the animators.

This is harmful, looks awful, ... and shouldn't exist.

It seems people dislike it because of the use of AI.

People are saying that 95% of the anime was made with AI, but that is not correct, only the animation part was done with AI.

The staff drew the characters, took photos, and illustrated a storyboard, then put all three elements into an AI software that animated the storyboard, illustrations, and photos. The resulting animation was then retouched by hand, and the other elements such as voice, music and sounds were added.

Have you seen those videos ... of people using AI to animate old photos? That’s basically what the staff did.

If staff hadn’t used AI, then Twins HinaHima would have been a picture drama.

I used to hate women now I love them, I even love cute girls now. What a great start to a new era. This anime will change a lot of things just like how I was changed ✊️. I don't give a lot of shows a 10 but this one is definitely one. Even when the main characters are girls.

It's a new AI era baby. There's no bad art now coz everything will be peak 😌. The art was amazing and the music was 🔝, it was better than Frieren. I don't understand how it got 5.5 rating with 375 s. People are hating on ... it already coz it just got AI, and because they're racist against women pretty much. These are enemies of the future! And Women!

I was expecting to watch a terrible anime with bad animation and designs, but this show actually surprised me in a good way. The story is solid and has the potential to evolve into a really interesting 12 episode series. The characters are funny and likable, and the animation, direction, and backgrounds are all impressive. Don't get me wrong, you can definitely tell that AI was involved, but it's still much better than you'd expect.

After looking at the credits, I found out that the show wasn't entirely made by AI. They used motion capture from real people to improve the animation and incorporated CG models ... to make it easier to animate. I think the anime was initially created in CG, then an AI model was used to convert it into 2D, with 2D animators revising the designs. The voice acting and script are also really good. You can tell that the creators put a lot of effort into this show, so it's not as "soulless" as some people have claimed.

So, should you watch it? If the idea of AI being involved in anime doesn't bother you, definitely give it a try. It's a good show, though it would be even better with more episodes and if it were a traditional 2D anime.

Twins Hinahima - A Literal Masterpiece (Yes, I Said It)

This is my first MAL review and probably the only one I'll ever write, but Twins Hinahima is THAT anime. A masterpiece. I had to.

The plot is simple: two sisters, Hinana (red hair) and Himari (white hair), are trying to become internet famous by ing videos, but they're flopping hard. Hinana especially wants to escape the dullness of her world and believes being popular might change something. Some weird stuff happens. Anyway, who the hell is this "justin" they're trying to get the attention from? Is it Justin Bieber? We'll never know.

This is the first anime ... made with ive AI, not "click a button and boom, anime". Real humans designed the characters, the storyboards, the flow, AI was used to assist, not replace. The same way humans weren't replaced by the invention of the camera or the car. We adapted. People feared the printing press once too, and now we have Twitter(or X, lmao). Evolution is scary, sure, but it's also beautiful.

People think using AI is easy. Spoiler: it's not. Not everyone can do it well. This OVA is proof of that. You think it's easy? Go make it, then. The backgrounds were pretty solid, some weird parts. Some AI text still looks weird (you know how it is), but the hands were pretty much flawless. AI hands used to be a meme and now they're clean. Love to see it.

What shocked me the most were the characters themselves. Their expressions were alive. Way more soul than half the shows airing right now (fight me). It made me think, maybe we overrate ourselves when we talk about "soul" and emotion.

And let's be real, most people hating on this probably use ChatGPT daily anyway. Hypocrisy much?

Three years ago this would've been science fiction. Now it's real. AI is growing fast, and yeah, I think it should be required by law to disclose when something uses AI. Transparency matters. But AI as a tool is the future, and Twins Hinahima shows how it can enhance creativity, not erase it. The voice actresses were great (Hinana's VA is Ruby from Oshi no Ko, lol what).

I would like to see AI being used for CGI background NPCs, personally. Those always look weird.

The songs were bangers. Maybe AI helped with some, I dunno, but the openings and endings had actual singers. Loved that.

Even the subs I watched were made using OpenAI tools and others, some lines were off, but my basic nihongo(Japanese for those who don't know) helped. It's wild how far translation tools have come too. They'll only keep getting better, just like everything else.

This anime doesn't deserve the hate. It deserves attention. It deserves discussion. This is what evolution looks like, and some people just can't handle change.

Disclaimer: I'm not pro or against AI. I use it for my day-to-day job and I think it can be of great help, if used correctly.

Now, onto this product. They claim 95% of the shots have been produced using AI.

Is this product good?

From a classic-animation perspective, it is not. For the most part it's rotoscoped CGI with an AI filter on top. And while the AI fixed some of the usual issues with CGI, it introduced other problems, known to everyone who is familiar with that technology: flickering and lack of continuity.
They might not be evident to untrained eyes, but they're present in most of ... the dynamic shots of this episode: unstable lineart, elements that change shape and coloring (ears, ribbons, hair, hands, roads, grass, etc), lines that intersect solid objects (e.g. hair going through bodies and clothes)... these 30 minutes are filled with those mistakes. If you're not watching closely you might miss some, but you don't need to be a professional to catch most of them.

The story in itself isn't bad, just a bit shallow. But you can't expect much more given the runtime.

Credit's due when it's due, the final part of the show was actually OK, and the uncanny image manipulations and transformations provided by the AI were actually perfect for that surreal beat of the story. Now, THAT'S how to properly use AI. Direction was also pretty good, in general, with interesting shots.

I think this product shows how in the future studios will have more options.
With the current technology AI can't replace good animation. This episode is a testament of that.
However, when a show is on a tight budget, AI will provide alternatives to the usual "PowerPoint slideshow" we are used to see.
Between this and a sideshow, I'm not sure which one is better. AI animation is much more dynamic, but unless they fix the flickering and continuity issues, you will experience jarring inconsistencies. We are still in "uncanny valley" territory. On the other hand, sideshows are more consistent, but static and less exciting.

All in all, I don't think this product is terrible. However, I can't recommend it to anyone. It has no other value than being an interesting experiment. The story is poor and the animation lacklustre for today's standards.
Makoto Shinkai produced Hoshi no Koe all by himself in 1 year. Without AI. Similar runtime, maybe a bit rough (he worked on it alone, after all) but artistically astounding and with a very deep story. Absolutely gorgeous.
It took 1 year and a half for studio KaKa to produce this thing, with the help of AI and with multiple people working on it.
Let that sink in.

My answer for "should you watch this or not" can be answered in one question:

Are you interested in seeing what AI can do to make an anime, whether that be out of genuine AI bro desire or morbid curiosity

If the answer is yes, then it's worth seeing as a technological feat

If the answer is no, there's absolutely no reason to watch it because it sucks as everything but a sheer "wow, they sure made a whole anime episode with mostly AI, huh" feat of technology

*note: while I put it in Not Recommended for the quality of the anime, it's also worth saying I am not ... an AI bro and find the concept of this anime even existing kinda disappointing*

I guess it was watchable enough to finish it, but as someone who will ride or die with Flowers of Evil's rotoscoping, this show is butt ugly and fresh off of watching it, it kind of hurt my eyes.

I am infinitely grateful that this was a 1 episode TV special and not a movie or a full cour series like I thought it'd be when I first heard about it.

You can see things adjusting in real time but idk man, it just doesn't look good, I don't know what to tell you. There's a scene where Hinana (the red-haired one) is chasing a cat and something about it just seemed uncanny valley to me with the backgrounds and stuff.

Speaking of Hinana, she turns around back and forth to look at 2 people and you can see her ears and hair adjusting. Ditto for the grass in one of their TikTok dances. Them starting recording and their heads are at the bottom of the phone screen was a really bad shot for me personally.

There are some nice, inspired visuals in the second half (at least I hope a human had input in that and AI didn't decide to include those things, that'd suck) but you're still looking at this ugly anime.

I actually liked the soundtrack. It was kind of whimsical, which fit the latter half of the anime.

The story and characters, as expected of a 23-minute tech demo, are an absolute nothingburger.

It features pie in the sky, bubbly Hinana (who, for what it's worth, has a design that would be ugly even in a traditionally animated anime imo) and the more grounded Himari (the white-haired one who looks fine if generic) and they wanna get viral (well, mostly Hinana).

Yup.

It sure is.

They eventually get pulled into a wacky, whimsical world while trying to go viral but the ending is just kinda unsatisfying. The twins seem to fixate on getting a comment from this "Justin" guy and am I missing something? I it, I may not be as hip with the TikTok as the youths but who the fuck is Justin? We never really get a sight of him. In a better anime, we'd see something like a highlight reel of Justin's best TikToks if he's supposed to be a content creator. If he's their crush from school or something, we'd meet him. Here? The best clue we get is a TikTok comment from a profile with a blank PFP.

The writing is just really weird too.

Hinana has this habit (well, she does it twice, but she does it twice in a 23-minute episode and it's as much of a personality quirk as we get in this show, better than Himari who gets nothing of the sort) of eating weeds and then spitting them out and going "bleh, that's bitter!"

At least she's touching grass, but huh?

Even the TikToks they film after the dance are just... weird.

Not only that, but they sandwich what looks like it'd be the OP in a normal show and then the ED with, like, a 2 minute break in between the two.

They sometimes try to get funky fresh smart with it. For example, Hinana goes on a tangent about how she tricked the world into thinking she'd get cola and instead got some red bean drink or something and they talk about determinism and free will and causality. That sounds funny but it was just kind of annoying. Not to mention, and maybe this is what Himari was saying, but you were probably in the red bean timeline the whole time in that case.

Yeah, this show isn't good.

I kinda doubt they even really cared if the quality of the show was all that good, it seems more like a vehicle for the AI art.

As said above, the AI art isn't very good but it is technically impressive that they could make even this in a relatively short amount of time.

If you are willing to watch a show whose AI art is the equivalent of shitty early-stages CGI (like ReBoot or something) and with no redeeming qualities outside of the technical achievement, it is a fascinating piece of work.

If you're indifferent to watching a glorified tech demo or are actively against AI art and will not consume it in any way, shape, or form, even out of morbid curiosity, this isn't worth your time and won't convince you/change your mind.

I WATCHED THE FANSUB

Before I say anything else, I would like to state that I do not ai work to the capacity that this studio used it for. In spite of that, I do not believe my MAL rating will have any affect on it whatsoever. So I have decided to rate this off of pure enjoyment.

"Twins Hinahima" was short, and enjoyable to an extent, sometimes dull. The colors were very vibrant, and pretty. There was little to no story, and somewhat made no sense at all.

I don't mind if studios use ai for small touch-up's in the future. Preferably i wish that ... they wouldn't, it loses the touch of humanity.

All in all, if you don't mind "ai work" you would probably enjoy this, I know I did a little bit. Out of my enjoyment scale, I give it an 6.8/10, round it up to a 7 for my MAL rating though.

I largely agree and I’m here to speak out against all the baseless hate. Hate against something new and revolutionary. Instead, I will focus on the finished product.

The visuals were stunning, the characters were likeable and most importantly, the story was creative with some surprising emotional depth to ... it.

And that is what any reasonable person should care about instead of tying their underwear into knots over the production methods used.

Recommended. It’s a refreshing piece of work.

The story? The characters? I loved those quite a bit, yet I can't in good faith recommend this Anime on good faith, not without going into an important detail.

AI was involved in this, and not in a good way. It's not just a matter of the clipping issues and places where the AI fails to do what it is supposed to do. This isn't a project that is setting out to make AI a tool for animators to help speed up the process; instead, it is a tool for replacing animators because the company sees their artistic value in question. The only thing that matters, ... after all, is the higher positions of director, script writer, and producer, right? There is no artistic integrity to being an animator, right?

At the end of the day, the story? The characters? They were interesting, cute, but then you start thinking about how paired back they had even to make the story be to make it work. There are only two character models, and the story is concluded in this short because it's all about making the process as cheap as possible. Had they added more characters and a more complex story line, they would have needed more time and money with just the limited staff they had, which would also defeat the process, yet that same staff member didn't catch all of what they needed to. Was that intentional, to show what the AI was capable of doing? Probably not, given that they consider the animator to be a throwaway part of the art, that they're not integral even for cleaning up what the AI makes.

I mean, had it been, they'd have released two versions, one where the AI does it's thing, and another where the animator was allowed to go in and clean things up, thus showcasing the current capabilities while showing how an animator was still needed.

Because honestly, I do get giving Animators tools to speed up the process and make it so they're not working less, but AI by itself for any media is soulless. There are certain things that the human eye can read that the AI struggles with, that it may never overcome because reading things like line and shape as a human does is - even the best coding out there is unlikely to solve this problem, the only solution being true AI. And if one knows about AI theory here, one knows what I'm talking about, how true AI is at this point is highly unlikely and entirely in the realm of sci-fi at this point, or at the very least a long way off.

Note - To clarify, the episode director and animation producer has openly said that animators can now leave the animation process to the AI and thus open themselves to directing positions, but this is someone who has no other credits including no animation credits such as key animator to their name.

rarely does anyone get something right the first time and the ep was no exception, some scenes are strange and the characters' expressions lack fluidity, but this would be a beta test, and for a start it's actually interesting, as it evolves it will get better and better, the artists have a reason to fear the AI, about the story it's basically about 2 NPCs that were created and that ended up bugging everything in the end, a breaking of the fourth wall in a way but within the animation itself, I came to see more out of curiosity but it needs to improve

Honest to god, call it AI slop, soulless or whatever, in some instances I would 100% agree with you. But one thing I realized while watching this, is how fluid some of those animations are. And almost immediately I made the comparison in my head with some of the most terrible adaptations in recent memory, that were ruined by bad animation.

Adaptations like...
8-bit's Blue Lock S2 PowerPoint slideshow, or Uzumaki's laughably horrifying animation, or even the currently airing TBATE aka. Studio A-CAT's "cheap hentai" as some fans have started to call it.

Of course, the use of AI in animation is still majorly frowned upona by ... a mass majority, and that using AI for the benefit of blatant copyright or theft of someone else's art/ style, is something I could never .

Yet, even still, the animation industry has some of the most overworked and underpaid jobs out there. And no matter how hard we try to deny it, there's some great technology behind AI. Which, despite the potential it holds, is being severely underutilized, due to the massive backlash anyone who would dare make use of, or even simply suggest (e.g this review lol).

And, I don't know much about animation besides one class I took in college. But one use-case I could think of, that animators right now are probably also thinking, would be something like: letting AI fill in the gaps between key frames. Wouldn't that speed up the process instead of manually doing it by hand? Or you could even do a rough sketches of a scene from the story board, and have a full AI mock-animation to be used as reference, before fully commiting time and work towards a particular scene. I can only think of a handful of examples as I clearly don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

So, in essence-animators can preserve the art and soul of animation, without sacrificing quality, while eliminating the busy work being done that's overall time consuming, which could greatly reduce the burden and their workload.

If having this tech could somewhat improve their jobs, then I would be all for it. Though I'm also aware of the potential of replacing those jobs with AI, I'm also optimistic that there will always be a table reserved for actual human hands, no matter how far we are into the future.

Laugh or confusing react me all you want, just keep in mind that Twins Hinahima is merely a test run. Once studios see how AI could let them reduce work time, thus spending less money and making more profit... no amount of screeching from the anti-AI crowd will change their minds.

To end this, that AI Will Smith eating spaghetti abomination that went viral a couple years ago? Did anyone see how it looks now? AI is the future, and there's no preventing it. Cause like Twins Hinahima, it will only get better from here.

Every discussion about this is purely about the """animation""" aspect and not like...the actual story or characters, I get why but at the same time not at all, like, you guys do know this is not actually the "first" AI anime, right? Is this gonna be like a "first openly gay Disney character" deal? Original "animation" made with generative AI has already been done several times before the technology became public to anyone with a laptop/computer. I will not dwell too much on my thoughts about the visual aspect in this review because out of the 15ish reviews up already you can read up on ... different thoughts about that aspect plenty.

Two sisters, one is upbeat and energetic the other more quiet and doesn't show much emotion. Hinana (the red haired upbeat sister) wants to be famous on tiktok to escape from reality and drags Himari (the white haired quiet one) into it even though she's doubtful about the whole thing. She was right to be doubtful as Hinana very quickly throws a tantrum over not getting popular on social media instantly and they get in a fight for a bit so that the actual plot can happen.

The actual plot is all about the escaping from reality aspect, specifically ANOTHER FUCKING STUPID ASS MULTIVERSE PLOT. I hate stories like these, genuinely I hate them so much. It's a terrible trend that is just done badly so often because of how undercooked it is most of the time and this is no different.

Hinana and Himari do not show much personality outside of their token twin archetype, this is mostly because this short has a limited cast and the social media popularity chasing section doesn't really show off Hinana's and Himari's relationship well. After some background checking it turns out that's because their tiktok is REAL and likely the only reason they spend too much time on this aspect is to promote the tiktok channel which promotes the short that promotes the which promotes the tv special that promotes the main social media. Neat.

Final thoughts before I end this review, finally touching on the visual aspect: The scene with the tree made my headache come back.

Honestly, pretty good. I went into it expecting much less from the animation due to it being AI. but the animation here is solid. it starts of feeling a bit different. which is natural but like any art style, you get used to it. It doesnt jitter around and seems to be very controlled. I personally liked it. Thanks to the way its produced, it even adds stuff that you dont even tend to see in 2d anime. actually accurate lip syncing. which i hope will be the standard going forward.

As for the story, it just seems to be a oneshot where 2 ... girls doing tiktok end up in another world. pretty standard story i guess. nothing the synopsis doesnt say. i could go into more detail but it'd no nothing to spoil 30 minutes of content. i personally like how messed up ai generated content is used pretty well at a certain place. Fits the aesthetic there.

I went into this anime hoping for it's success and studio KaKa delivered on the mission that they set out to do. I can't speak on the story since I couldn't find the anime on any site with any subtitles, but I found it on Bilibili and based on what I saw visually, it looked good (8/10). I've seen many trash anime (Ex-Arm), trash light novel adaptation (Summoned to Another World A Second Time) and this was better than a lot of them, it or art and animation. Sure there are flaws and the use of rotoscoping is evident, however, it wasn't a slide ... show or Microsoft presentation looking anime (Blue Lock) so it was a major win in my book. Also, the character models were consistent for AI so that's another win. I recommend that anybody who wants to someday make their own animated project to watch this anime as it sets the foundation of what AI can do for animation potentially on the cheap for the little guy.

For anyone who blindly hates AI in anime or AI in general, sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not going anywhere. Even if it wasn't adopted by the masses, companies would still use the technology and you'd still lose your Jobs anyway (Just like computers and the internet). So just accept you're going to lose your Jobs to AI eventually and plan ahead from now so you can keep making money.

Overall, Twins HinaHima is proof that AI can be successfully integrated into Anime and make an anime that is able, so I'm excited for the future. Hopefully, the days of slide show animes and bad CGI will be a thing of the past in the next 2 decades.

Watched Twins Hinahima. Figured I'd throw out a quick review since most people are blindly trashing it because "AI!!!". Nobody’s actually talking about the show.

It’s… alright. The story's about these twin girls, Himari and Hina, and it mixes fantasy with social media shit. Not super deep, but it does have some interesting stuff going on with identity and online personas. Pacing's a bit uneven, and the writing leans into melodrama sometimes, but whatever — it kept me watching.

Animation-wise, it’s rough in spots. Definitely not high-budget, and you can tell some of it’s AI-assisted. But for a small team, it's actually kinda impressive. Not because it ... looks amazing, but because it exists and doesn't look like total garbage. If anything, it proves that indie creators might actually have a shot now. AI won’t replace human creativity, but it sure as hell makes production faster and cheaper.

It’s not the second coming of anime or whatever, but it feels like the start of something. A test run. If more small studios use tech like this, we might actually get weirder, more personal projects instead of the same recycled isekai slop every season.

Anyway, worth a watch if you're curious about AI in animation or just want something different. Don’t expect perfection, just a glimpse of where things might be heading. When I heard that this was made 95% with AI, I was curious—and honestly, I was expecting something worse. Current AI technology in 2025 still doesn’t feel good enough to produce a full anime. It struggles with animation, maintaining coherence in long conversations, and AI-generated voices still sound awkward (I recently watched the Super Cube AI-generated dubs, and they were pretty rough).
If you're reading this review ten years from now, this might no longer be the case, but as of today, AI still isn't ready for certain tasks.

That said, this episode really surprised me—it was actually very good. I haven't checked all the details of ... the production, but just by watching, it’s clear that only the animation (and maybe parts of the script) were AI-generated. The music and voice acting were definitely done by humans. Overall, the weakest part of the anime is some of the animation. And I'm not saying that because of the usual hate AI productions get; it’s just my honest opinion. Some scenes look a bit stiff, but even then, it's not terrible at all.

The story itself was really enjoyable: it follows a couple of girls trying to go viral on TikTok—until (SPOILERS) it's revealed they are part of a virtual reality, a memory recording of a real person who visited the place to reminisce about her youth and her sister (who I theorize is deceased in real life). It was quite endearing.

Just a final reflection: human society struggles with big changes, and AI is a huge one. Many jobs are disappearing, but at the same time, new roles are emerging that didn’t even exist a few years ago. I once read that "humans aren't built to seek happiness; they're built to seek predictability." People today grew up in a world without AI, so they have strong preconceptions about how art should be made.
This anime is a perfect example—people are hating on it just because part of it was made with AI.
If you're reading this in 2045 and you’re, say, 15 years old, you might find this way of thinking strange. But this is genuinely how people felt in 2025.
