Maoyuu Maou Yuusha

Fifteen years have ed since the war between humans and demons began. Dissatisfied with their slow advance into the Demon Realm, the Hero abandons his companions to quickly forge ahead towards the Demon Queen's castle. Upon his arrival at the royal abode, the Hero makes a startling discovery: not only is the Demon Queen a woman of unparalleled beauty, but she also seeks the Hero's help. Confused by this unexpected turn of events, the Hero refuses to ally himself with his enemy, claiming that the war the demons have waged is tearing the Southern Nations apart.

However, the Demon Queen rebuts, arguing that the war has not only united humanity but has also brought them wealth and prosperity, providing evidence to her claims. Furthermore, she explains that if the war were to end, the supplies sent by the Central Nations in aid to the Southern Nations would cease, leaving hundreds of thousands to starve. Fortunately, she offers the Hero a way to end the war while bringing hope not only to the Southern Nations, but also to the rest of the world, though she will need his assistance to make this a reality.

Finally convinced, the Hero agrees to his now former enemy in her quest. Vowing to stay together through sickness and health, they set off for the human world.

Warning: this is political / economy / military fantasy. And one of, if not best in that specific genre. If you like that genre, you'll love this one. If you hoped for anything else - sorry.

If you hope for proper romance, there's a lightweight thread of that on the sidelines (with a bit of harem added for bad measure), action / combat - only small amount. There is a proper drama of the characters involved, but it's not the main focus. Also, the show is an isekai albeit it never outright its it. Think typical isekai protagonist keeping their earthly origin secret - here, it's ... being kept secret from the audience too, but you see the hints.

The art and animation is 10/10, absolute masterpiece. The artistic choices in writing are somewhat weird (nobody has names, they are always referred to by role/job) but you can get used to them. It has a little fanservice which feels quite out of place, also the harem thread was totally unnecessary (I'd much rather see the main pair's romance better developed), but they are minor bits that aren't enough to spoil the whole. And the political layer of the story is a delight - the depth, the intrigue, the way problems are overcome by intelligence and strength of character, not violence - this makes for something unforgettable.

Mixed Feelings

This isn't your typical feel-good fantasy anime with romance to boot. At first, it seems like the anime will provide you the some good adventure-type story with some romance along the way, but it failed at both aspects. However, it's still worth a try if you like fantasy in general.

If you're specifically here for the romance, I doubt this anime will satisfy you. In short, romance wasn't served well. It seems promising at first, but it will leave you disappointed after finding out you've already made it to episode 12 and there's almost no progress in the romance department at all.

Not Recommended

Decent. A little bit of polygon which I don't like but I didn't really put it on my grading. The characters don't have certain names and are only called by their titles. Bad ending. There's a good potential character wasted. Everything else isn't really that special. The pacing was very weird and negatively unpredictable. The fan service was a little bit exaggerated, yet there's nothing special about it. The only good episodes were the very first ones, which actually intrigued me for a moment, but then it just failed abruptly as the episodes proceeded. Quite disappointing if you ask me.
