My Hero Academia: Recycled Content

You know, in many ways, I kept trying to ask myself what exactly was there that I did not like about the main character of this anime, that I like so much about Midoriya. As I kept watching the show, and I kept trying to understand it, it finally clicked.

It's because this dude isn't irable, nor relatable, nor likeable

For this review, I decided to rewatch the first episode of my hero, and it perfectly sets up and explains what did All Might see in Midoriya that day.

Midoriya had lived his life being picked on by everybody, and worst of all, ... he kept getting assaulted by the very person alongside whom he had grown up.

Since childhood, Midoriya had to live knowing that his biggest dream, his biggest ion since he was 4, would never come to fruition. And yet even still, as a child, he couldn't tear himself away at his idle, at the one icon he believed in no matter what, even at the time of being practically guaranteed to stay average for the rest of his days, while the very person who has been bullying him his entire life, will thrive simply by having been lucky to have been born with a quirk.

And yet, no matter all of this, what does he do?

When he sees all-might, he clings onto him like glue, and does not let go

THAT, is when I became invested in Midoriya

THAT, was when he had proven he had shown me reason to care

CLEARLY, even All Might, in all his time being a super hero, had never encountered somebody that was actually willing to have gun as far as to cling onto him.

And what happens next?

He meets the true all-might, the face under the smile, and what he hears that day ends up being some of the ugliest truth he could ever ask for. He had lived his entire life, and clearly, when given the chance, was given the opportunity to seek out his idols approval, and yet what did that idol do? He did the right thing

He told Midoriya the truth

Hero work isn't a joke, this isn't a game, this is no musical where everybody gets their happy ending.

Unless you have a quirk, you will DIE out there, and the last thing all might of all people is going to do, is inspire somebody to seek out that death and carry the guilt of that sin on his mind, more than he has had to have done for long enough as it is.

And what happens next, was when I was sold

Midoriya abandon's all hope, he abadon's his idle, his parents, his life, all of it

To save the same prick that had burnt his cherished notebook and had detered him from becoming a hero all his life.

He let go of all his hate, fear and joy, and just ran at the impossible head on, same way he had clung to all might prior to the fight.

THIS was when I was HOOKED. Midoriya, a helpless loser, was given every reason to give up, and yet he didn't.

He didn't let his hope die, which ultimately allowed him to inherit his true key to achieving his goals


Now, with all of this, all this that you are most likely familiar with, what exactly does Vigilantes do?


We see slider-boy
- being born with a quirk he doesn't develop
- skip his entire childhood exposition, hence removing any significant trauma that may have been a catalyst for his wanting to be a hero
- provide no showing of potential, besides him having a quirk
- him doing community service at night, while playing dress-up and pretending to be a hero
- gets bullied by the same gang of thugs... thrice...

But ok, maybe I am being too harsh, maybe his moment of glory is when we see the true reason behind why we should care about this guy.

Ok, the girl that clearly showed appreciation in his community service, shows him some affection, what does he do?

- Disregard her playful comments
- Gets flustered over what he does
- Walks away

Like bro, if you truly do understand how deep at the bottom of the barrel you are, you must at least appreciate the consideration of somebody as popular as a literal pop-star, going out of her way to show their appreciation for what you do, despite how trivial it may truly be.

What happens next?

That same person who had showed him hints of affection and sincerity is getting assaulted by the same thugs that were bullying him earlier. And by god all mighty, if this shit didn't make my head 10% balder from how much balding I experienced in this scene, I would be the lucky party walking out of this nightmare.

ARE YOU SERIOUS, THIS PERSON IS GETTING ASSAULTED AND ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS YOUR POSER ASS FUCKING HOODIE? I bet all-might would have ground slammed you into the pavement had he seen that you care about his hoodie over doing what he stands for. GET UP AND CALL THE COPS YOU SPINELESS EGUANA

Well, I hope that you at least catch a reason to run around the corner and call the cops and....

*catches glimpse of the girl getting assaulted

Him: "No my hoodie isn't lame..."

I genuinely don't care that you had your revelation that you have some sort of orbs down your pants
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will save this god forsaken dogshit character from being salvagable.

Are you kidding me.

YOUR REASON TO ENTER BACK INTO THE FIGHT, IS CATALISTIZED BASED ON THE INSULT OF YOUR FUCKING HOODIE???

I'm done

You're done

This is over

We are done here.

Knuckle Duster, while being a sick character, is just a batman rip off that is more off the rocket and is portrayed as much older and poorer than batman ever were.

Pop-fart is just a dumbass idol girl that does nothing, doesn't strive to be a hero, and yet clearly follows the two main characters because she wants to be one.

And the main character, well, you heard enough of him already as is.
He is a whiny little baby, that does the equivalent of cleaning army toilets and yet thinks that he is ready to shoot a gun.

The only reason knuckle duster has picket up this loser, is out of desperation, rather than actual interest or promise within him. He works above the law, and as such, is not picky about partners, especially ones that he can easily manipulate.

Together, they make the: RECYCLED SQUAD

This entire show, is just recycled content, concepts and character art, built around the world of MHA, which occasionally runs into real MHA characters, to make you vaguely think that you are watching something actually good, when the reality couldn't be further from the truth.


They definitely decided to drop this series now because:
Season 7 was genuine peak, and the publishing company is trying to milk the series before it ends after S8. With considering how Season 7 ended, and following similar trends in all other media, with the climactic end of a series, it is certainly hard to pull off a sequel series, as it ends up having to compete with the quality comparison of the finished work. (IE - Marvel burnout after endgame).

Add more fuel to the fire by adding those feelings of "Oh hey, thats that one character from the other show, ITS ALL CONNECTED". Finally, most obviously, try to milk a series they know is doomed to fail because it is literally using recycled content and concepts, so may as well push the toys and merch of this series, while the fab of mass buying my hero content is on the rise.

I actually love My Hero Academia, and despite all the undeserved hate the show gets because of its degenerate fanbase, it still piqued my interest one day. The last two seasons even earned a spot among my 10/10-rated anime. And yet, I couldn't be more disappointed with the vigilante series than it could have been possible.

It's funny that Knuckle Fister teaches the main character to aim for the garbage, as that is precisely where this series belongs

Man do I absolutely hate mediums that glaze the themselves and their difficulties of how much it takes to create that medium. It is genuinely one of my personal biggest hating points, and this show is no different.

When I say this, what I mean is that I hate shows that are themed around the animator, and they go into this deep rabbit hole of talking about how much it takes to be an animator (or a video game that delves deep and glazes the difficulties of how much it takes to create the medium)

What makes this so much worse is that this was made by ... mappa, genuinely one of the top ranked animation studios, and yet all of their sweat and tears is being poured into this soulless slop that combines two of the worst story archetypes:

Self praise

and

Isekai

This shit is animated so well, and yet even so, I have no drive to neither praise nor want to continue watching this

Its character designs besides the MC are forgettable, and its story telling is boring

All this show has going for itself is the flashy visuals and high quality animation.

If this was made by anybodye else, it would have been 10x more excuseable, and yet wasting Mappas time on creating this mediocre story was the biggest waste of time this studio could have ever taken up.

I genuinely hated this, and clung to seeing recycled assets like it was my job

Mid encarnate

This show tries to do everything, to be a jack of all trades, while never truly needing to have done so in the first place

When I first started this anime, I genuinely thought it would follow a far more cliché direction than the one it ultimately took. However, it turned out to be subversive in a fun way, featuring a main character with attitude—without resorting to bullying their romantic interest into submission. (By force that is)

Overall, it was really enjoyable… until the fighter nation attacked.
Okay, I do not fucking understand—what fucking purpose do these shitty fights serve in this otherwise chill anime? All they do ... is shatter the nice, relaxing tone it keeps building up, only to crash down everything with unnecessary action.

I fucking loved this anime at first. It perfectly captured the feeling of how empty life can be, even when surrounded by friends who, despite their personal stigmas, are always willing to step forward and make life a little less dull.
And then the anime decided, "Oh man, we sure are chill. How about we disrupt that by adding a bunch of senseless action? That’ll boost our ratings!!!"

The action in this anime really dropped it from a 9.5 to a 7 in my eyes.

None of these fights were necessary, nor did they, in any fucking way, contribute to pushing the story forward. So much more could have been achieved with subtlety. Instead of shoehorning in action scenes, the show could have deepened its themes in more meaningful ways.

SPOILERS AHEAD

1. Asakura Ryouko’s fight

If she had fought in a much more novice and blatantly reckless manner, it would have added so much depth to the moment where she gets interrupted by Yuki. This could have built a powerful moment—where an inferior, inexperienced model makes rash decisions, leading to her ultimate deletion.

2. Koizumi Itsuki’s “Anger Issue Monster” Attack on Titan fight

This one was slightly more excusable since fighting is literally his job. His existence is tied to this kind of role, which, in turn, helped intensify the sense of dread when espers were missing during the dream episode.

3. Yuki’s Overpowered Moments

Since we’ve already seen plenty of “Yuki being OP” moments, the locus fight could have been so much deeper if, instead of battling, the characters wandered the desert, reflecting on their personal existences. They could have questioned why they continue to do all of this—why they are essentially babysitting Suzumiya.

This could have been an excellent setup for a deeper character exploration. Instead of making them feel like mindless puppets designed to entertain Suzumiya, this moment could have reinforced the idea that they are real people, placed into these roles, striving to do their best to protect the world from her impulses.

It all could have culminated in a beautiful moment where they are swarmed by locusts, only to find the PC guy amidst the storm and return home that way.

But no… let’s just fight this big-ass bug for no reason… Das okay too, I guess.

This anime is cool, but damn, it could have been so much better had it cut out most of the pointless action sequences. These “invisible threats” felt insignificant when the real horror was, and always should have been, Suzumiya’s boredom.

The show should have delved deeper into those self-realizing moments, developing its characters in that direction instead.
It’s fine the way it is—but it truly could have been so much more

(It truly ended up failing in the exact same way Death Parade did, pointless fights that disrupted the vibes built up throughout the entire anime)

This anime is a god-damn modern day masterpiece

I have watched so much anime, so much filth riddled with annoying characters, annoying friendships, annoying enemies and a generally distasteful plots. To put it bluntly, all of which were the exact same.

Anime that does not dare defy the standards, to be bold, show naked characters, show intercourse, show true violence.

This anime does it all and then some.

The plot of every episode feels grounded in realism, while using themes, criminal groups, and warfare terminology that befits the show's plot, it is gorgeous. This anime is a masterpiece in its defiance of the tropical molds set ... by the modern day industry, which has been experiencing a similar mental neutering like that of the ones pushed out by black rock.

Every show you watch, it is always lacking in blood, violence, serious tones and general actual character growth rooted in realism. While the world, abilities, conditions and everything revolving around the world can be completely made up, the emotions provoked by characters need to be grounded in realism.

Golgo 13 has sex, doesn't talk, makes millions off of each kill, and then goes on living to kill again. He has overcome the financial burden of living, and has elevated himself to a higher plane by simply embracing what he does, his true nature, his true inner monster.

I LOVE that there is no comedic relief, no annoying side characters, nobody that could even remotely try to be annoying. At most, you could argue that the man who makes Golgo's guns is drawn funny, but even then that is a far stretch from how many other anime fill their cast with annoying loud mouth babies.

He does not fight it, he does not let morality get over him, because he does not defy his true nature.
He has sex with women, doesn't fall in love, kills, betrays, traps, and simply accomplishes his objectives.
His silence speaks louder than anything Zenitsu has ever said.

Anime publishers need to be bolder and follow their mangakas true original vision of the anime.
Because when they do, we get a masterpiece like this. It's an incredible anime, that defies brain-dead boundaries set by Karen's that think anime is just cartoons.

Anime is and can be so much more

And Golgo has paved the way for that to be the reality.

It was honestly amazing how much I ended up going into this with the 6/10 mindset, only to finish the movie with a 9/10 review. I genuinely shouldn't have doubted the genius of Tatsuki Fujimoto

I was initially going into this movie after having rolled my eyes over the premise of
"Wow, self-aware anime character wants to be a mangaka" AND "They are going to delve into a deep analysis of the difficulties of being a Mangaka?" daring today aren't we.

Going into this anime, I have always hated this trope in anime where the medium dissects its own production and creation process. While I can ... see why people like it, I do not. I don't like it when shows or anime break the 4th wall and build the plot of the show around the premise of how the medium I am watching is made.

It is cool for people who are also within that medium and who enjoy these self dysecting premises, but I personally hate it as it simply wakes me up from the fleeting feeling of being invested in the story.

That said

This movie

Flipped all of my expectations on its head

It got me absolutely hooked on the premise, and kept doing twists and turns within the story that made me feel further and further invested as the story progressed. The more I watched without stopping for an already long night, the more I kept being unable to stop myself from watching further to where the plot was going.

It was an amazing movie and the fact that it were only 1h long was the perfect cherry as it did not make me feel like the story was becoming drawn out. I do believe, at the very end, there could have been more silence and literal frames of the character just taking in the moment of what was happening, instead of jumping straight in, but at this point I'm nit-picking.

Its a good movie, I liked it, go watch it.

Honestly, it's kind of sad when the entire quirk of an anime revolves around characters speaking Russian, and yet they don't bother hiring fluent Russian speakers for the Russian segments of the dialogue.

Ask any Russian speaker, and they'll tell you:

The sub VA speaks broken Russian, with an accent that sounds like a novice picking up the language,

while

The dub VA speaks fluent Russian and is a perfect fit for the role, applying the voice perfectly to the character.

However, one thing that both the sub and dub translations fail at is hiring Russian speakers for the background characters. In both versions, all characters besides Alya do ... not speak proper Russian. They have thick accents, whether Japanese or English, pretending to speak Russian. This is an absolute disservice to all Russian speakers.

In an anime where speaking Russian is the unique factor that distinguishes the plot, how can they not hire fluent Russian speakers for the Russian-speaking segments? These are petty budget cuts that could have easily been avoided if the production company simply reached out to the people who would be dubbing the anime in Russian anyway. It makes you question why they didn’t just ask them to dub those segments, which they would be dubbing regardless.

The plot itself, aside from some hints of Russian-inspired design choices, is pretty much what you would expect from any other romance anime.

But come on, for Russian speakers, watching this anime subbed is pure torture. The dub clearly put in much more effort by hiring a proper Russian speaker for Alya's role, but it wouldn't have cost much more to bring in additional native Russian speakers for the minor roles too.

Finally, if you're looking for that "authentic Russian-speaking experience," go watch something else.

I literally watched the entirety of Attack on Titan in Russian because StudioBAND are absolute legends when it comes to killer Russian voice acting. I know what good Russian-spoken anime sounds like, so this cheap replica didn't do it for me.

An honestly dope anime that I fully expected to be much more deep and brutal then it ended up being, but in a good way. I originally thought it were going to be much more like Kingdoms, but instead it ended up being a lot like Drifters. I can see why people compare this show with Demon Slayer, but I do feel like it is much more like Drifters than Demon Slayer.

My only gripe is that this mf asks me to get excited way too much.

Can't go an episode without him being like

"There is a one in a 10 billion chance we are ... going to meet a new hot af girl throughout this episode."

"There she is, she looks hot af, spectacular, get excited"

Still, a really dope anime I am definitely going to be continuing watching

An absolute fucking blast of emotions

A lot of depth and relatability can be grasped from this anime, maybe not in the sense of gambling related per say, but in the sense of personal struggle and wishing to get a fresh start.

I absolutely loved this anime, if not for my friends recommendation, I would have kept sleeping on this masterpiece.

It is an absolutely gorgeous anime story wise, as unlike a good deal of other anime, it does not let neither the fact who the main character is nor the fact that he is the main character NOR the fact that there are more episodes ... to come, become a factor in why he wins his battles.

This season is certainly a big improvement over the first one

That said, it has a couple of design choices about which I feel mixed

1. I personally hate it when shows overly tie their story progression with a movie release. I do indeed feel like, for long-time fans, watching the movie and then diving back into the show is a great experience, especially when shared with friends who also love the series.

That said, this only applies to people who watch the show on release, for everybody else, it is simply a confusing factor of wanting to jump from S1 ⇒ S2 and yet running into ... problems understanding some plot points in the second season. Worst of all, with S2 starting with a flashback, it is so difficult to tell that there even was a need to having watched the movie before starting season 2.

2. During a flashy and bright fight, occasionally, the screen will become dimmer and blacker for no reason. I do not understand what the hell is the logic behind this? There is nothing I can do to make the screen any brighter than it already is, and yet they periodically dim the brightness of the show for no reason.

I cannot tell if this were a thing during S1 too, but it is especially prevalent during S2's flashy fights. Simply refer to any point when Itadori would use black lightning, and I feel like the screen becomes dimmer and ruins the viewing experience.

3. The narrator is so god-damn annoying. Why is there a narrator? Who asked for the narrator to explain what is obviously happening on screen? For the blood bending guy, all throughout that fight, the god-damn narrator couldn't keep his yap shut, and for what? To explain that “oh, pressurized blood can cut good” yeah, thanks bud, that much was obvious, otherwise the antagonist wouldn't be fucking doing it. I can see what he is doing, he is pressurizing his blood to cut through objects, I can see that for myself.

My biggest angering point about this never ending intrusion of the character's thinking process, is the entire fact that the author literally implemented a mechanic to explain that characters get stronger from explaining their techniques to their enemies. Why would you implement this as a literal fact, and yet overly rely on a narrator mid-fight.

4. Finally, the absolute worst part about this season is when the most important flashback takes place. Why the hell are we seeing Gojo's flashback in the beginning of the season? I personally feel like while the hype of seeing Toji get resurrected and kick ass was hype, and that the period between the flashback and his resurrection was needed to build up hype, I likewise feel like it would have been much better to insert Gojo's flashback before Gojo got sealed away.

It actually would have burst so much more emotion from the fact that his best friend's body was invaded by a parasite, it's unbelievable that the flashback happened so early.

Overall, I am satisfied with the season, but I do feel like some of these design choices could have had a much better execution.

So much suspense, so much depth, such an interesting message, and yet it all plummeted in the end, at the moment when it mattered most.

I felt such a weird feeling while watching this show; all throughout the show, I simply kept jumping back and forth between characters, trying to figure out which ones were robots and which ones weren't. Honestly, until "the airport scene," I didn't even realize that Gesicht's wife was even a robot. I honestly kept watching the show and kept trying to figure out, "wait, is this person a robot or not?" because the best part about this feeling was that it ... never at any point showed you or gave you ways to believe that any of these people were robots. The best part about all of this was Naoki Urasawa's approach to simply drawing his characters in his classical style. It is so unironically genius to simply draw characters in a style we are all too familiar with while fooling us into getting confused on when a character is or is not human.

THAT was the beauty of this show, this feeling of confusion and internal struggle for acceptance, this was what made Pluto unique. While Monster was an amazingly written story, Pluto was its sort of social experiment on your personal perception of "How would you feel if the person in front of you was a robot?"

The most absolute perfect example of this comes in the form of Helena, Gesicht's wife. To reflect on my personal experience, when I began watching the show, I simply lacked the comprehension of "why would two robots be occupying a space that could have been saved for humans?" To me, what made sense was that while Gesicht was clearly a robot, Helena was simply married to a robot, as I presumed that there would be no way that two robots would be of high society and living as well as Helena and Gesicht were. The confirmation of her being a robot truly felt like a revelation equivalent to that of some other major plots in the entire show.

This was the feeling that drove me to keep watching Pluto, and yet it became a secondary factor, followed by a very hype suspenseful setting up of this great beast, that was supposed to bring the climax of the show where it would challenge SOMETHING about ourselves, our perception of robots and computers as equals, only to flop and bring up weak themes and reasons behind the motivation of the anime.

To myself, and how I saw things going, the ultimate climax was supposed to be the ending of all life and how the destruction of humanity, of the robot race, and of all of us as a whole was supposed to bring the ultimate change for greatness. As that the entire flower field was supposed to be the world after all of humanity and all that it has created would perish. Like seeing the father of all robots program Adam in a way that he would realize this, and how that entire part of him writing on the walls the instructions to the creation of atomic bombs strong enough to destroy everything was the leading sign that Adam had realized what needed to be done.

But no, it turns out that the hidden hand simply wanted to control humanity, and that Pluto was simply this misunderstood little guy who simply wanted hugs and kisses, as did Adam after awakening.

This anime was going places, and yet it drove off a cliff halfway through the road.

I "enjoyed" this anime, but I can both understand why people liked it and why many Naoki Urasawa fans consider Pluto to be his weakest work. That said, knowing that Pluto is Naoki Urasawa's least perfect work, you can only imagine what other masterpieces await us in the near future.
