I've seen clips of this anime and thought those were entertaining, but only now started to watch the series.
I'm enjoying it a great deal. It's not going to wow you in any specific category, but it does have charm in everything that it strives to do.
The shenanigans that Hitomi finds herself in literally made me laugh. Anzu is a character that you keep rooting for. Utako(the female bartender) actually surprised me because while she does have a caring nature, she's not a goodie-goodie.
As for hina? Hmmm, I can see where the anime is going with this monotone character, but at the same ... time it still makes her the weakest link compared to the rest of the cast.
Update:
I did enjoy the first half and I was surprised that the second half of the season is even better then the first half. There were more comedic and touching scenes to be found.
Therefore I'm raising the score from an 8 to a 9.

I honestly don't get why this anime is so highly rated.
At the very beginning of the anime you're introduced to the main 4 characters. However is there a point in calling them the main characters? I'm at episode 8 and besides the sibling of one of these characters.......literally nobody else is fully shown or introduced in this anime.
I can deal with that though.
This anime progressively becomes more monotonous with each episode. It feels like if you watched one episode then you pretty much watched them all. There's three locations in this show that take up 99% of the run time; a ... bland office, the same restaurant, and an apartment. Even the dialogue and topics of conversation seem to be rehashed from episode to episode. The ONE "joke", if you want to call it that, that is supposed to bring humor into the show fell flat the first time around....and yet the female main characters beat it to death. I will give you a hint. The joke is regarding their boyfriends.
I can deal with that though, barely.
I just generally see a lack of point and direction with this anime. Is it funny? Absolutely not. I didn't even smirk one time. Is it romance? I have yet to see anything of that after 8 episodes. Even in the first episode when two main characters agree to date it's delivered the same way you would ask somebody if they could you a piece of paper. The following episodes you have to remind yourself that these two characters are dating because they don't even act like it. Even episode 9 is titled "Go out on a date with me"....signifying that despite being a romance anime officially....that nothing of romance happens or is attempted to happen until the very end of the show. Wbtw the anime only has 11 episodes.
THAT I can't deal with. I can't deal with zero entertainment of any kind, or even any attempt until the show is about over.

This anime has been given bad reviews because the manga is considered better due to more scenes of character history and more details. I think that's a very unfair measure of judgement because 99% of anime that is based on a manga would be the same way, ESPECIALLY if it weren't a guarantee that the anime would last more then 1 season.
I think an anime should be based on it's OWN MERITS. Thankfully, another reviewer thought similarly....and he also came away with a positive review of this anime.
Now on to the point of my view of this anime. When I learned it was ... based on an older MC who once lived a secluded life, but is thrust into a more populated area in a medival/magic world..........another anime came to mind. That was "I Parry Everything".
I have to be honest, "I Parry Everything" was an awful, awful anime. There wasn't one good thing about. The MC was perhaps the dumbest MC I can recall in anime that I've seen over 25 years. Even Goku from Dragonball would be considered a genius in social settings compared to the MC of "I Parry Everything".
I don't mean to get side-tracked, but I say all of that to stress that this anime is THANKFULLY considerably better in every way than "I Parry Everything".
In THIS anime there is a "crispness" in the art that is better then the generic/cheap style that plagues a lot of other anime. The animation may not be the best of the best, BUT it also is above average. One thing that I despise in ANY anime combat scenes is a lack of animation or boring fights. Thankfully, I'm spared of that in this anime.
The MC, Beryl, is a modest, but very skilled swordsman. He underestimates his strength due to a lack of experience and NOT because he's an A-class simpleton in any believable way, like the MC from "I Parry Everything". I do find the character of Beryl endearing.
Then there are the side characters. I think Beryl's father and mother fit their role very well, even comically well when comedy was required. There are a few characters that Beryl would be reunited with due to them being former students.
My initial concern with those former students was if they had something going on about them that wasn't about idolizing Beryl. Thankfully these former students do have their own motivations and aren't just a "cheering squad".
Although, this anime is not going to be "top of the mountain" in the world or anime and gain a ton of attention, it is worthwhile to watch with hopes that it will get more then one season........and I will look to read the manga after I finish this season's episodes.

Well, here we go again, I suppose.
Yet another anime featuring magic, kingdoms, and demon army that is a let-down.
This anime strikes all the boxes of the shallow anime tropes that you expect in recent years.
Nicey-nice MC? Check
Almost zero character back ground? Check
Lacking character development? Check
A LACK of fluidity in action scenes requiring good animation? Check ... A predictable and shallow plot? Check
An overly cutesy "mascot"? Check
I suppose what makes this worse then the typical anime of it's genre is that it's just so boring. I'm not a battle junkie. I can watch many episodes without any action and be perfectly content IF there's something actually interesting being done or spoken on. However, that's not the case in this anime.
That being said, it's not a horrendous anime.....but it's certainly not even a good "time-waster".

I was having some doubts after finishing the first episode, not because of anything really critical, but rather ....well, a running joke that was repeated many times, even before you really knew the characters well.
Thankfully, the episodes after that are much better.
I legit laughed out loud several times watching this show. Maybe not as hard or as often as I would when watching Gintama, but it definitely amuses me.
If there is a main character in the show, it would be Akane and she pretty much serves as the "straight-man" whenever Nozomu acts up. There's a difference between being a good "straight-man" and ... being boring/bland. Thankfully Akane falls into the former category. She's not amused with the antics of Nozomu, but she does have a pulse and her character does show throughout the episodes.
If there is a "face" to represent the show, it's probably Nozomu. She doesn't have a filter, high energy, and can be short-sighted. Those things if not handled well could make a character annoying to watch. However, the writer did a great job handling her character. While she is all those things listed above, she's not annoying, but rather entertaining in her antics.
Shirori completes the trifecta group. She's very quiet, but not so much that she doesn't show you, the viewer, things about her that will make you curious on who she is. You will want to know more about her.
All the other characters are worth their salt as well. This isn't about some grand story or anything. It is a time-killer anime, but it's a good one. Fyi, Saku(Loli) is adorable, especially her relationship with her grandma. She's the "must protect" girl.

I understand that not all manga is suited for 24-minute episodes. I'm fine with that. I really enjoyed some anime that had episodes that are only about 10 minutes or less, such as "Daily Lives of High School Boys" or "Tsuredure Children".
However, this show....while "relaxing" and "comfortable" feels empty, without charm, and boring.
I mean, "a character mixes up his socks colors".......and now he has to "play it cool". Amazing, right? That's the type of overlooked mistakes that gets beaten to death and the whole basis of the show. Not funny mistakes, mind you, just mistakes.
There's no real comedy, romance, entertainment, story, or really anything. ... So, I honestly don't understand the appeal on why so many people like this show.
If you happened to listen to two random people make small uninteresting/non-eventful chit-chat....that would be just as entertaining as this show.

I put off seeing this show mainly due to my favored genres being comedy, romance, or action. However, I could kick myself for doing it.
I'm on episode 5 and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. The characters, especially the MC, are likeable and believable. The story is relaxing but not boring. Just as importantly, I look forward to each new episode.
I find the MC to often have a mindset that would mirror our own if we were in her situation.
It's kind of hard to pinpoint one thing that it excels at over everything else, but when everything is combined it just sets it ... apart as being better than most anime that I've watched.

I really wanted to like this anime. It has a cool visual aesthetic and characters that feel genuine in their motivations. However, the biggest problem is not that it's another "get revenge" anime, but it just feels like it tries to do too much, and ironically too little for other things, and too soon.
1. The scenes and situations change so fast that it might give you whiplash. I understand the allure of teasing you about a character's backstory, but wants to unveil more later.....but when you have 5 or 6 people all in that category at the same time...........it feels like the anime is ... rushing the overall plot further then actually digging it's roots into why you should actually care.
2 The anime suggests that there is world-building, but gives you no real sense to immerse yourself in it. There will be plenty of references to different people, wars, battles, and heroes.............and you're thinking "what?" with steam coming out of your ears trying to everything that supposedly happened, but is never seen. It gives more "word vomit" rather then actually showing you.
This truly is a missed opportunity to make one of the rare good "revenge" animes.

This is how a fun anime/manga that doesn't take itself so seriously is supposed to be done. There is a difference between being light-hearted, like this show is, and something that goes off the rails........like that deer-girl anime.
Each episode and more importantly, each character, is worth watching. Are the characters completely unique? No, but what screen time they do have is still enjoyable.
I've said many times that in order for an anime to be good that they can't give a lazy effort to it's side-characters, and thankfully Sakamoto Days does give each character their own charm where you feel their presence in the ... show.
I think some people are overly harsh on the show critiquing it for something it was never meant to be, rather than what it is meant to be. It's like they think this anime is supposed to be some deep riveting drama or something. It's not and never was meant to be that. Believe it or not, not every anime needs to be written as if a case study was going to be done on it. Frankly, some of the critics just come off as wanting to be more enlightened than they actually are. If they had their way all anime would be put into a box with little originality.
An anime can just be fun, and I think some reviewers have forgotten that.

1. The FMC has a one-track of mind of wanting to be adored by everybody. The male protagonist doesn't bow down to her and this causes her to make it her mission to make him adore her as well. There's really not anything else or deeper about her character. It's just a egotistical girl that has an unhealthy obsession for validation. The MC is just as one-dimensional. He's a guy that is stand-offish but secretly a huge simp for the FMC, like everybody else.
2. There is nothing that has any resemblance of humor, so don't expect comedy to pick up the slack.
3. ... One of my biggest pet peeves in anime is when a character walks down a street and all the random characters, young and old, male and female, are so bedazzled by this character that they stop what they are doing, stare, and even blush. This show has that and it fuels the FMC's ego. Of course, unfortunately, this anime does the stereotypical thing that a lot of low-budget anime does.....it gives random panty shots here and there, even without reason.
4. I feel very confident in saying that after watching anime for over 20 years.........this anime must have a top 5 lowest budget for animation. There are MANY, and I do mean MANY, "scenes" where the characters don't move or barely move(mouth) and the camera just pans to the left or right while the characters remain motionless. There are a lot of close-ups of faces with minimal mouth movement....and I suspect it's done so that background environments and other characters don't need to be drawn.
5. The overall story is not the only thing predictable and cliche, but even the dialogue and actions. I knew the stuff that would be said or done before it happened........
______________________________
Summary -
An abundance of one-note characters, predictable/cliche story, almost non-existant animation budget, and a lack of humor..........and I really don't think this anime has any redeeming qualities. It reminds me of some stories on fanfiction.net I read when I was a teenager and written by young teens.....but worse.
