Yeah it kinda sucked. But to avoid spoilers from episodes I've been watching vigilantes subbed, it's not that much of an issue though since most of the og MHA cast are hardly in it or they only make short cameos so I can overlook it. I'll def watch s8 in dub when that comes out though ;), either way imo the VA in sub is pretty sweet, love Knuckleduster's voice in it.

Yup! The edition I found in the bookstore was originally released in 2004 (it was the first US release, even though there had been groups trying to get Gen officially translated and released in English as far back as the mid-1970s!!) and they released the remaining nine volumes sporadically between then and 2010. Then between 2016 and 2018, new second editions of all ten volumes were released simultaneously in both paperback and hardcover formats that are still fairly easy to find, at least on this side of the Atlantic.

I'm holding out for the five omnibus edition volumes since:
1) I tend to be a sucker for big collected editions, especially if they're hardcovers lol. I read a fuckton of western comics too in addition to manga, and I've got a bunch of huge, 1000 page+ omnibus editions that often collect 30-40+ issues at a time lol
And 2) while they're not too hard to find and not too expensive, some of the 2016-18 volumes are slightly out of print and run around 30 USD nowadays give or take, which obviously adds up since there's 10 of 'em. The first omnibus edition, which again, is the first two of ten together, currently has an MSRP of $35. So they'll be bigger, have perhaps higher print and binding quality... aaaand cheaper on a whole to boot lol

For reference, here's where I'm pulling those dates for the previous releases from:
https://leagueofcomicgeeks.com/comics/series/139011/barefoot-gen

They don't have the omnibus editions listed on there yet for some reason (which is strange since that site's usually pretty on top of releases well in advance), but here's the listing on Amazon for the first installment:
https://www.amazon.com/Barefoot-Gen-1-Keiji-Nakazawa/dp/0867199512/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2T4R2WF6W4ODL&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.xvsIT4j3jX8MX_eiygcY0WlzxVrfCCY--Tdp2etmtpuHKzQfK-YeYy6xl54bp8CJ8c5WlePV7oCq9SETst3HZRp4Z3CsIDulSLr1pchzWfmANeZ9Lcdj1M1aSXz7bbCgYQz9fmO_5M9oF8zKEpiTXULlirszaaWM66f-FGmFvytJFKSxAe549ywx5dF2PqhejywTXovlSa7pdlLE8RTTgakz5H8uLN40SzucxRdBxlk.bF0rTFY_I2bnNYnc56mbxKMGJgOS9Mas1hsQlGGBjWM&dib_tag=se&keywords=barefoot+gen&qid=1747515613&sprefix=barefoot+gen%2Caps%2C109&sr=8-1

I actually found the first volume for a few bucks in a used bookstore a few weeks ago lol. I prefer reading physical manga if available (though sadly there are still SOOOOO many manga I wanna read/have read that haven't seen the light of day in the US in of physical releases, so I am forced to read digitally, official or otherwise, way more I wish I did lol)

Still got nine volumes to go to read the whole story, but so far the first volume was REALLY good; definitely a SUPER underrated manga that deserves FAR more recognition from modern-day fandom. It's a heartbreaker for sure, but it will also fill you with SO many other emotions.: hate, hope, pity, laughter, suspense... god, shōnen manga have really gone downhill since the late-90s or so; they really don't make 'em like this anymore...

There's a hardcover omnibus edition that contains the first two volumes combined coming out here in the States month after next (mid-July) that I obviously pre-ordered already lol. They're planning on releasing five total, which will be the whole series, so I'm super psyched for that!

Honestly, Origin is a really easy starting point for Gundam manga considering it's just a wholesale retelling of the original series. Can't go too wrong jumping on in. Although I definitely recommend watching whatever mainline UC anime grab your attention first and foremost. Char's Counterattack is solid.
PlasticRobot May 9, 7:17 AM
Thx! You should check out Gundam The Origin's manga if you like the look of its art. I'm not even a full volume deep and it's already a really easy rec to make.
PlasticRobot May 7, 4:20 PM
I can relate. You'll have to LMK how it stands up as you get through it.
PlasticRobot May 7, 11:12 AM
How's Black Clover? I'm already set on either watching or reading it eventually, but I'm also aware that the series has a somewhat split reception, so I'd like to hear someone's genuine opinion.
TheNoo May 3, 11:15 AM
Will do when I get round to it lol... I really advise against watching Dragon Fist... the others are far more entertaining
TheNoo May 3, 9:20 AM
As per requested here: new reviews

...Dragon Fist was unironically more difficult to recommend than any of the others since it was super average and I didn't have much to say that was either super negative (to play into a so bad it's good) or positive. XD
FlyingDunsparce May 3, 7:24 AM
Oh wow, haha. That's pretty crazy especially since it finished over 2 years ago. I started watching it again after putting it on-hold for around 3 years so I have a lot of catching up to do. But I also started One Piece and Bleach alongside it so I could experience watching the "Big Three" at the same time with Boruto taking the place of Naruto.
TheNoo May 1, 9:06 AM
Lmao, I'll let you know if it's worth watching when I get round to it then.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
