Ryukushi once wrote in his acclaimed visual novel, Umineko, these very words "Without Love it Cannot be Seen." these words don't just apply to Umineko however, but stories as a whole. Without empathy, a story cannot be truly seen. And this applies 10x to ReZero, a show that many people have claimed is pure torture porn and senseless violence, on top of having an obnoxious main character who you can't stand. These criticisms, are quite frankly, from people without love. Because Rezero was NEVER a story about violence or gore, if you genuinely watched Rezero and got "torture porn" out of the experience you need ... to take a second to reevaluate the show you just watched. Rezero is a story about love and growth, it is about becoming a better and stronger person, even if you quite literally have to redo from zero.
Rezero's bread and butter has never been its psychologically gripping time loops but in its fantastic character writing. Especially the main character, Natsuki Subaru, a protagonist so amazing he quite literally makes people drop the damn show. And that's the beauty of Subaru. He is one of the most human protagonists I've ever seen in fiction, and I would whole heartedly recommend Rezero to anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, or intense self-loathing. Trust me, as someone who's dealing with those, Subaru is one of few characters who made me feel seen.
To new viewers I recommend going in with the mindset of "character's first, psychological horror second." when something violent happens, don't think, "wow that was scary af." think about the characters dialogue and what the story is trying to say. Think first, feel second. Because the people who dislike Rezero, are ones who tend not to think in the slightest, they would weep reading Umineko fr.
Anyways this next section will be dedicated to me debunking criticisms of the show for my own fun. If you don't want spoilers than stop reading this review right now and hopefully my first three paragraphs convinced you to give this show a chance.
"Natsuki Subaru is a loser." true, but that's the point. He is a shut-in otaku meant to debunk isekai protagonists who can magically show up and form harems despite being losers in the real world. He is a purposeful criticism of the perfect escapism fantasy and that's why he is portrayed as so flawed. He is a loser and an insufferable asshole at times because the story and all the characters in it are telling him he needs to change.
"Emilia is an asshole." a stupid criticism made by incels and Rem fans. Like how Subaru is a deconstruction of an isekai protagonist, Emilia is a deconstruction of the ideal heroine. Instead of ALWAYS being on the protagonist side and following them like a simp, Emilia has a breaking point. She is an extremely kind person, which is why at first, she seems "ideal". So when she gets mad at him for breaking her trust viewers automatically start hating on her. And by the way, Subaru is completely in the wrong and she has every right to be mad at him. First he breaks her trust and even afterwards has the nerve to embarrass her in front of all the important people of the kingdom she's TRYING TO BECOME QUEEN OF by proclaiming he's her knight. A move that embodies Subaru's initial selfishness and sense of pride he feels to the idea of being her knight in shining armor. Which is honestly REALLY similar to stuff that happens in the real world that it makes me laugh that people hate Emilia for this.
"Rezero is torture porn." completely untrue, yes Rezero has a lot of gruesome scenes, but it is NOT torture porn. The violence has purpose, it's not just to say, "wow were so edgy." like Akame ga kill or Dean wonderland, it always has build-up and leads to character development. For example, let's take Subaru's first encounter with the witch's cult. Betelgeuse torture of Subaru and Rem leads to a lot of character moments. Such as 1. Rem's confession 2. Subaru's continual downspirial and eventual breakdown in ep18 and 3. the continual show of Subaru's methods of escapism. After this first death he goes into a state of "madness" but by meeting with Betelgeuse he is able to call him out on his so-called madness being only a method of Subaru's escapism. By acting like he is traumatized he is able to escape blame for his own faults. This is just one example of how Rezero's violence isn't just for the sake of it, but there are plenty other examples out there.
"There are no stakes cuz Subaru can just return by death." return by death isn't an all-powerful method that can be used to escape any issue. For starters. there are plenty of mistakes Subaru makes (such as his fight with Emilia) that he can never take back, listen, I doubt ANYBODY could kill themselves even if it means they could redo a mistake they made. People just don't have enough strength. If you think you can do that, you are wrong. But anyways, in RZ there are still consequences for actions Subaru takes. You see this part more in season 2 which I won't spoil but theres a BIG thing that happens early on that Subaru isn't allowed to just redo. Not to mention the mental toll redo by death takes on a person. Saying its "overpowered" or "makes it so they're no stakes" is untrue because redo by the death has never been the solution to any of Subaru's problems.
ok thats it I think peace gang watch Rezero

In my always correct opinion (obvious sarcasm for those reading who are 14 and below), the worst thing a comedy can do is overstay it's welcome. The jokes that were once funny start running dry when it's the same characters you've met since episode 1 and there's nothing new you can do to spice it up. This is where Tonari no Seki-kun succeeds, it's short and sweet with only 7-minute-long episodes. making for a fun experience with lots of laughs.
Rumi is a great protagonist, she's the typical "straight man" to the chaos that Seki provides her with on a daily basis but what's good ...

a 6.12, really? God, people are so biased towards idol anime its unreal. This show is awesome. Not only is the animation and CG gorgeous but the premise and characters are also great. Combining magic and music is always a plus in my book and seeing how the girls use magic to solve all of their issues without really solving them is really interesting. This is the anime im most excited to see come out week to week because of how invested I am in seeing what all 5 of the girls are hiding behind their normal dispositions. Even the stereotypical pink genki lead has ...

With high scores from my friends, I went in expecting a funny and cute watch. I mean, I like Love Live and Umaru, what about this one would make me not enjoy it? Well, I did a bit, but more than anything I was left feeling like I was missing something. That there was a puzzle piece that everyone but me could fit that made this show special. Azumanga Daioh is cute and sometimes funny, but that's about it. The characters are tropes and nothing beyond said tropes, there ae some highlights like Yukari or Sakaki but a lot of the time you will get ...

Criminally underrated show. Kuroiwa Medaka is impervious to my charms is a classic romcom filled with fun characters and a charming romance. I always love protagonists with a bit of a dark side to them, if you agree with that statement, you'll probably enjoy Mona. She's egocentric and cares way too much about her image, only really portraying herself as the perfect girl. This is what makes Mona so fun to watch. Her inner monologues are so vibrant and her plans to make Kuroiwa fall for her are a joy. This also makes the moments where Mona is self-conscious or shows vulnerability all the more ...

Bang Dream It's MyGo was a series I was really excited for as a long time Bang Dream enjoyer. I saw the hype on twitter and started watching with my 2 other friends- little did I know, this series would be the most overrated anime i've watched in a while. Now, I can see the appeal, teenage girls with unstable mentality's finding solace in each other? Great concept. I love shit like that. The problem lies in the execution in the character writing, i'll go from best to worst. Anon is a gem that everybody should love an appreciate, she should have been the example ...

As a neurodivergent and person who suspects she may have BPD, this one really resonated with me. A fantastic romcom with an insanely likeable and goofy female lead as well as a very interesting male protagonist with his own development. Seeing Ishikawa develop into a better person who is able to connect with not only Anna but other people too is one of the best parts. The other being seeing whatever goofy thing Anna is doing, she's such a treasure. The karte style endings is also super cool, makes the eps feel more dramatic. All in all, The Dangers in my Heart is a heartwarming ...
