こんにちは! Hello! I'm James. At this stage I think I've watched enough anime to no longer be classed as an anime noob. Yay! Or should I say やった-! I like to talk so don't be shy if you want to chat :P I'm also in the (long and delayed) process of learning Japanese so if there are any other beginners interested or native speakers who fancy a Discord chat, please let me know! Outside of anime I love the cinema, reading (see my all-time faves below). I was (and am trying to be once again) fairly outdoor-sy. I like long, scenic walks in the late autumn.

Anime/Manga

This is mainly for me to keep track of the endless recommendations or discoveries I come across but I'm always up for making new friends (even if it's only online) too! I doubt there will be many people on this site close to my actual location but given that literally none of my friends have any kind of interest in anime having the option of chatting to people online about it is the next best thing, so if anyone reading has any solid recommendations then message me :)

My Score System

Generally it's a sliding scale with four checkpoints. 10, above 5, below 5 and 1. I'll mention my own internal criteria for these scores below and any deviation from these numbers is due to how well the anime executes certain things, e.g. a show with a score of 9 will have better pacing/writing than a show scoring a 6. My own individual taste also influences the scores I give shows I've watched, reflected by the tags attached to my list. A solid 5 is "OK". Not great, not terrible, just an average anime.

Exceptional pacing, well executed original concept, gorgeous animation/art style and an engaging, well written story line with nuanced characters that show development over the course of the show. If it's a comedy, is it funny? In my opinion shows that receive this score are the pinnacle of what anime is capable of and are fit to rival any other form of entertainment media out there.

Above 5
Well paced, well animated with a good art style and an entertaining plot/characters. Writing quality is generally good, tropes are handled well and although some elements may be mismatched (i.e. comedy segments in a show with serious themes) they do not detract from the show and may in fact add to it.

Below 5
Sketchy pacing and an over-reliance on tropes/deux ex machinas to either set the scene or develop the plot. An art style or animation that feels generic. Characters that are either one dimensional, badly written or have motives that do not correlate with the overall plot. Somewhat entertaining but feels like a slog to get through.

Completely irredeemable trash that is either morally repugnant or is so poorly written/incoherent that you wonder if the writers of the show were on LSD when it was in production. Animation quality is basic and the art is either bland or offensive. Characters are unsympathetic with no clear motivation and/or lack any form of defining characteristics.

It can't be proved but it has to have some basis on the subject you're talking about and that's why an explanation is necessary.

I mean I'd ask you to explain why you think so. That example I gave had an explanation which is debunkable, you are quite clearly exaggerating as your perspective of anime doesn't encom "all anime ever".

You have quite the condescending tone so I think that's why they took it the wrong way.

Haha yeah, I also add anything that looks remotely interesting to PTW so that I won’t forget about it and have a huge list I can pick from when I’m looking for something new. Undoubtedly though, this leaves my PTW cluttered with garbage.

Shimoneta is perfect then if you enjoy a mindless laugh, it’s my favorite anime comedy so far alongside konosuba and one piece.

I’m pretty good aside from feeling perpetually tired lol. Banana Fish and Chiha are both in my PTW, probably will check out Chiha sometime soon since it’s so highly acclaimed.

I watched bamboo blade recently and really enjoyed it, I think it would be up your alley. I would compare it to original naruto a lot (although they’re completely different lol) they give off a similar atmosphere, with B.B. being far more relaxed.

Shimoneta is something I wanted to mention as well, since you seem to have enjoyed prison school. Although it could be hit or miss, some people think it’s dumb some think it’s funny. I thought it was a pretty good laugh as long as you weren’t trying to think.

Akatsuki No Yona I saw a long time ago but I like to reccomend to anyone. It’s unfinished though which kinda left me hanging =( author had health problems I believe.

Lastly, honorable mention to the trashiest anime I’ve seen in a long time; https://myanimelist.sitesdebloques.com/anime/37210/Isekai_Maou_to_Shoukan_Shoujo_no_Dorei_Majutsu better translated as “The Otherworld Demon King and his Slave Girl Magic” lol. They made up their own title for the English version cause I guess they didn’t think the Slave girl magic would be a popular/acceptable title XD. I do not reccomend this. I’ll it it got a fair amount of laughs out of me though which is what I picked it up for.
