Listen here you little shits who are trying to rate this anime bad. The poor author died at like 31. She could not even finish the anime, and the anime studio is making it out of respect for her memory. And you have morons here trying to analyze this like its their final project for some english class in university. Kindly get over yourself, its cute, and only 12 min per episode. Now that im done ranting, the anime is adoable and sweet, and the studio does a great job honoring her memory. It is something I could rewatch and come back too later in life multiple times for how cute it can be.

I’d like to begin by encouraging people who will be quick to judge, that I have rated this show an 8. I know a lot of people on this site who are quick to label a review as unfair, if it mentions any heavy criticism at all. That is why I want people to understand that, while I have a lot of criticism in this review, I still enjoyed this show, as the high score clearly conveys. The reason I say this, is because I feel it is my duty to be honest about the content that appears in this show: that is the purpose ... of a review afterall. And simply put, I believe that most of the western magical girl fandom have showcased an increasing over-sensitivity and refusal to accept several classic tropes of this genre. And if those old school tropes bother you, then I’m afraid to say that I simply don’t think The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant will be something you are able to stomach. Now with that disclaimer out of the way, allow me to describe what the experience of this show is like.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant (I’ll refer to it Mahoaku, it’s Japanese title, going forward), is a romance focused, magical girl anime, featuring a budding relationship between the magical girl Byakuya, and the evil Lieutenant of the bad guys, who she was forced to fight, Mira. The main goal of this anime is to present the relationship of Byakuya and Mira as an unexpected, yet powerful romance that changes the courses of the two lovers lives for the better. In the case of Byakuya, she is the epitome of a soft spoken, kindhearted and selfless magical girl hero: her sheer unwavering kindness to everyone (even towards the bad guy Mira), is what kicks this entire relationship into action. For if Byakuya did not show kindness to Mira (as opposed to just beating him up like how some other hot blooded magical girls would do), then this plot line would have never happened.
Mira, by contrast, is a man with his life heavily in order and perfectly planned. He takes his position on the bad guy team very seriously and appreciates his job. However his devotion to his job and to the bad guys begins to waver when the sheer kindness of Byakuya causes him to doubt himself. Simply put, I think this is a fantastic dynamic for a romantic comedy anime and is something I have never seen before in any other anime. And I say this as a huge veteran of the magical girl genre (if my profile pic didn’t make that obvious).
Now, it’s time to address the obvious elephant in the room, which I hinted at in the earlier part of this review: there is very clearly a large age gap between these two characters. Byakuya has the appearance, innocence, and height of a very young girl, and this series directly hints at how young she is, as several jokes of the series involve around her young appearance. Later on in the manga, another girl character is introduced named Hibana. And Hibana states that she is 15. Byakuya also states that she is the same age as Hibana, meaning that the female love interest of this show is 15. The age of the male love interest of this series is made much more ambiguous, but on a visual level, he looks like a man in his 20s, and on top of that thwre are several times in the manga where he feels uncomfortable about Byakuya’s school life / school uniform being worn (perhaps signaling the fact that he is an adult and so, he feels uncomfortable being reminded of the fact that his lover is 15.) Speaking for myself, these elements do not bother me, because I am well aware that age gap romances are a huge part of the history of the magical girl genre. Sailor Moon, one of the most influential magical girl shows of the 90s, actually made Tuxedo mask be a college student, just so that the age gap could be even more apparent in the anime version. So, while I do not have any problem with this, I have noticed a huge over sensitivity within the magical girl community, and I suspect that many people are immediately extremely offended that this show has an age gap romance like this. I’m sure the first thing that a lot of them are asking would be “well, maybe the anime could age Byakuya up? Right?” But allow me to explain why I think that is extremely unlikely, and would in fact probably never be something the anime staff would do: you see, this series is an adaption of a manga by Cocoa Fujiwara, a manga author also known for her popular series Inu X Boku Ss (which I checked out for the sake of this review, and it also has an age gap romance). Fujiwara Sensei is no longer with us, she has ed away. And a lot of people in the MyAnimeList forums have been discussing the fact that, it’s extremely unlikely that the anime will make any changes to the ages presented in the manga because it is likely that the anime staff see that as something that would be disrespectful to the memory of the manga author who has ed.
So, now that we have established that this anime is likely a 15 year old female protagonist dating an adult man, I’d like to explain why I consider this series to be worth watching, and why I challenge the modern magical girl western fandom, to consider my perspective (though I know they’re probably not gonna change any time soon and will continue to be quick to judge). Simply put, this trope of an age gap romance is an extremely common thing in the magical girl genre. Along with the already mentioned Sailor Moon which features an early high schooler, Sailor Moon/Usagi dating Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru, who is in college, another hugely influential shojo with a large age gap is FullMoon Wo Sagashite, a fantastic magical girl idol series that was very influential, and features a large age gap as well. I consider myself to be extremely active in the magical girl community, as I follow and read tweets from several influencers in the community such as Sailor Guardian Hope, and Ayumi, the host of the most popular Mahou Shojo podcast. One thing I have noticed in the replies on Twitter and the among the communities of western magical girl fandom, is that they are extremely sensitive to age gap romance, to the point that they label any show that contains them as being “worse” for having that element (in other words they consider it a flaw). This has gotten so absurd, to the point that even Precure, which is a long running franchise that involves several magical girls dating their talking animal mascots, has been labeled as a problematic series, simply because of the fact that when the talking animal mascots become human, they appear much taller than the magical girls: which has led people to label several of the mascot X magical girl romances in Precure (such as Nozomi X Coco which is my profile picture) as being “romanticized grooming.” Simply put, I find this degree of stretching the truth, to be emblematic of an increase of blame, needless attacks and cruelty within the western magical girl community. And that is why, for these reasons, I believe that most western magical girl fans are not going to be able to handle this show. Mahoaku is a show that is open about its love of these classic romance tropes, and simply put if you out there are managing to take issue with something as innocent as the Precure ships involving mascots and humans simply because they “look like an age gap” then I don’t think you’ll be able to handle this show: if something as innocent as Precure offends you, then you simply will not be able to handle this show. And that is without me even going into depth on the fact that this show, Mahoaku, also features quite a bit of sexual humor, involving Byakuya being perverts on by the talking cat Angel she has as a partner. In the manga her cat Angel is stated to be a “chain smoking adult” but he makes several inappropriate advances on her such as groping her, and making sexual comments toward her.
In other words, this show is like your worst nightmare if you are unable to handle Precure: because if you find the consensual, caring and clean romance of the magical girls and mascots in Precure to be offensive to you somehow, then you’re gonna be horrified by this show and the way the mascot in this show is acting.
With that out of the way, I now want to address why I find this show to be so good in order to give it an 8 out of 10 (and why, if I love it so much, it is not a 10/10.) Simply put, this series is just the kind of genuine storytelling I missed in modern anime. So many modern romances involve a lot of cruelty and physical abuse between the two partners, often played for comedy (this is especially something I noticed in western cartoons such as those on Nickelodeon. Where for some reason the girl or the guy act like a total ab, but we are still supposed to see them as secretly being in love),
In contrast to those stereotypical, annoying romances, Mahoaku gave me one of the most genuine romances I have seen in a long time. I was utterly in love with the romance between these two. Furthermore, Studio Bones, who animated this show, have gone out of their way to really present this as faithful to the manga art style as possible, while also having great animation, and it looks GREAT!!
So, why is this not a 10/10 then? Well simply put, I found the jokes surrounding Mira, where he grabs his heart in pain because of how much he loves Byakuya, to be extremely overused. It’s like he does it 10 times per episode. I understand it’s an anime trope (to feel physical pain in your heart from how sweet someone is being to you), but cmon guys, there’s a limit. The joke got a bit old. Furthermore, as someone who is a huge fan of mascot X human romance, I am saddened that the mascots of this show are basically complete creeps, once again just doing the evil mascot thing that every other modern magical girl anime seems to be doing. I’m so sick of that! I’m not saying that the mascots have to be in romance with humans (though I would love to see that be done more often, in more anime besides just Precure), but I just wish the mascots were not so, so creepy. I don’t find it problematic but I do find it typical and saddening. That is why for me this is an 8/10 and not a 10.

Mahoaku is a fitting tribute to late mangaka Fujiwara Cocoa. She was sadly never able to see her work finished or adapted into anime, but studio Bones were able to follow the framework she left behind and stayed true to the spirit of the original manga while adding their own respectful touch. A simple and wholesome that romance fans of all walks of life will enjoy.

I’m a massive sucker for the star crossed/forbidden lovers trope. I love seeing two people from vastly different backgrounds come together, fall in love and overcome despite the odds. Mimori and Mira are supposed to be sworn enemies, yet ... the more time they spend together the more they realise they have in common and enjoy each other’s company. These 12 minute long episodes were pure bliss and seeing the purity with which they both looked at each other and yearned to deepen their bond really resonated with me. Mira might be an “evil lieutenant” but he’s one of the kindest fellas you’ll see, and the extent of his cruelty is wanting to see Mimori embarrassed because of how cute she looks. Mimori is basically cuteness personified, and her childlike naïveté about the world was adorable to watch. Because of her backstory and circumstances as a magical girl, her time with Mira is basically a learning experience for her. She gets to see what the outside world is like and learn about people other than her creepy familiar.

Which perfectly leads into my ONE issue with this show. The rapey familiar. Mimori’s familiar basically sexually harasses her nonstop in this show and takes advantage of her financially. Luckily he’s only in a few episodes, but when he does show up it really just kills the vibe. I’m not sure what purpose he’s really serving narratively being that way, maybe Fujiwara sensei thought it was funny or her editor did.. but for me it didn’t land and just made me uncomfortable. Mimori is the sweetest and most wholesome girl ever so having a dude want her to walk around naked, or work at a host bar or try to grope her just didn’t sit right with me. The story also tries to redeem him somewhat in one of the final episodes where the theme is basically “he’s a pos, but he’s the only family Mimori has and she loves him anyway” I wouldn’t say this was a minor detail of the story, but certainly not big enough to detract from my overall positive impressions of the show and how sweet Mira and Mimori relationship was.

Other than Mimori familiar, the other side characters are great. Hibana, the cursing mahou shoujo had me dead every scene she was in from just how vulgar she is. Mira’s evil company colleagues were just as nice as he is, which kind of begs the question, who are they supposed to be evil to? These people are all genuinely amazing. I wish we would’ve seen a little more of them honestly, but sadly that’s probably just due to Fujiwara sensei not being able to finish the story and flesh things out more. You can definitely feel there was some more story to squeeze out here and we’ll just never really know unfortunately.

The show looks gorgeous. I haven’t seen a ton of Bones stuff, their work is usually solid, but I’ve never seen it look this good. It’s so pretty, vibrant and even though it’s a seinen manga, there’s some shojo vibes going on. This is a big part of my enjoyment of the story because Mimori’s faces are so cute, I love the chibi style they go with in some scenes. Just a really sweet time.

Mahoaku episodes are only 12 minutes long and don’t overstay their welcome, so if you’re into romance anime there’s really no reason not to check this one out. It’s a very sweet and wholesome story that will feel like a sugar rush. I’ll miss it. My only reason for not giving it a max score is that we don’t see a kiss or actual relationship by the end which again is likely because Bones didn’t want to disrespect the original work by going too far ahead and giving an original ending.

Mahoaku gets 9 out of 10.

It is an incomplete story as its creator ed away during its creation & it was made into an anime out of respect/ion.

It lacks a satisfying ending and while it explores a lot, it lacks further clarification to its elements understandably due to the above.

It features wholesome, cute and sweet moments & comedy between the two main leads with beautiful & incredible art/animation.

It has dark humour between the wholesome sweetness that varies in severity.

One review on here says that it is "kid safe" and I highly disagree as it features sexualisation, exploitation and assault by parties other than the two Main Characters & an unclear/questionable ... age gap.

Lastly each episode is about 10-12 minutes in length.

Honestly, if you can overlook the ecchi/assault/exploitation, enjoy the magical girl & romcom genre and also want diabetes this is for you.

Only 4 episodes have been aired so far while i am writing this review but i want to make justice to this overlooked hidden gem.

it is so nice to watch, so cute, so sweet and most of all, so fun and entertaining i cannot understand why this show has such a low rating. Do not trust the overall score on MAL, this is better than most romance animes from this season which are getting way more praise and attention than this one. Also it is easy to watch, since the episodes are like 11-12 minutes long, it gets to the point and it is not ... a bad thing.

For now i give it an 8, considering i usually rate lower than most people, it is a very good score. Could be higher when i finish the whole thing. Take this more like a recommendation than a review itself, this show deserves some love and, above all, some recognition and justice. If you like romance and a heartwarming experience, watch it.

PLEASE WATCH IT. it's underrated i guarantee you all. for anyone saying "ooh its just a loli x old man" are probably people who doesnt watch a lot of animes! xD Byakuya is simply just short and her body build is petite. but clearly she isn't a minor as she works multiple jobs. she also is soft spoken cuz of how she has no people to be surrounded with. That type of girl is literally possible IRL, what more with an anime?! besides, for those saying its a bait or such, i've got news to you regarding character design and its significance in portraying ... personalities.

ACTUAL REVIEW:
It's diabetic and sweet, perfect for anyone who enjoys romance. as a female weeb myself i can confirm that its genre of shoujo is one of its most appealing points. Shoujo genres are supposed to make (mostly female audiences) feel and be on the shoes of what they daydream of. Being saved and protected by a loved one, taken care of and being ired-- every girl definitely dreams of that. This anime can perfectly satisfy one's wishes. It's a simple enemy-to-lovers type of story, yet it makes me blush everytime an evil lieutenant actually goes crazy over his crush, deep inside. Their interactions give me diabetese. so sweet, natural and innocent. Almost feels like a nostalgic shool/youth-focused slice of life, but with characters out of school.

THE OPENING SONG it's one of my favorites so far. the art and color palettes in this anime looks so pleasing in the eyes (they're pastel cuz magical shoujo rightt)
the transformation animation of Byakuya gives you nostalgia. its like watching modern PPGZ animation.

Cocoa Fujiwara the author and illustrator of the series ed away at age 31 in March 2015 leaving the series unfinished. The third and final volume of the manga was published a full year later after consulting with her family so as to serve as the finale.

The anime, made a full decade later in her memory, is a sweet romance that makes fun of the usual magical girl tropes.

Mira is our straight laced lieutenant. Just think straight A honor student, class president, five million afterschool classes, calculating kind of guy. Now make him a simp and you got it! For some reason his reaction ... is to always throw his credit card at the girl lol!

Byakuya is our wilting flower of a magical girl. Soft spoken, gentle, feminine, stupid. Now throw in perpetually broke and works every job under the sun (and moon!). You got it!

The forbidden love trope never gets old but here the series does lean more on the "moe" factor to turn Mira into a simp defender. It's very upfront about it too so you see his reaction coming a mile away which just adds to the fun.

Normally I hate the wilting flower trope but the anime is very aware of the genre tropes and actually plays them up so it's more of a shared joke with the viewer than anything.

It's sweet and at 12 minutes per episode doesn't over stay it's welcome. Also it helps that the feelings are mutual, in most shows the female lead will act oblivious throughout, having the feelings returned was far better. My one complain is that the show doesn't really end but sadly that can't be helped considering the circumstances.

Super cute and short romance Mahou anime! if you're looking for something adorable and pretty this is just the right amount. Nice if you're a long-time Magical Girl anime fan, but not looking into getting into a long series. It stays to a slice of life! It's soft and airy with humor. It leaves the viewer with a soft rosy face at the end of each episode. It has been a nice change in 12 min long anime and is quite similar to how it feels to play anime boyfriend games, but for a Magical Girl. Shun's reactions are much like an intense love for ... someone who is perfect in the views eyes. Its funny that he gives in to wanting to make Magical Girl happy and her life better. He's love is pure, but also very much so a simp. This switch in genre for mahou shojou to slice of life romance has been very pleasant. This is a very enjoyable series that can be watched while on break, in transit, with little time to spare, or just to change the pace in one's life. The only unfortunate matter is there isn't many fight scenes.

This is by far the best anime (bias) in this entire year! Everything from the characters, art style, animation, story and all are beautifully made and I'm being overdose on cuteness each time this anime airs a new ep.
It is sad to see that this anime and manga is over in a sense that this anime only covers 15 chapters of 20.
And with the death of the creator "Cocoa Fujiwara" who died back in 2015 of march 31st. It doesn't seem we'll be getting any new updates unless someone close is willing to continue her story, aside from that.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - Between the never-ending battle of good and evil, Love is (always) War.

What comes to your mind when it comes to love and romance? I'm sure there's a lot of things that you can think of, but when it's all summed up, it's a complicated affair. Just as every romance has its own excessive use of melodrama, so too is the ever-oversaturated combo of the mix known as the rom-com genre. Many people choose to display the rom-com genre by their own agendas, but at the end of the day, there's always a couple ... formed at the end of the way, even if at the whimsical wishes of the shipping wars. And in this season, more than the trials and tribulations of dealing with good and evil, the warm-hearted feeling of good and evil seemingly protecting each other in secret, now that's what you call an escapade. May I introduce to you: Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. a.k.a The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies, or shortened to MahoAku, the very last and unfinished work of beloved late author Cocoa Fujiwara, who tragically ed away in March 2015, her most famous work being Winter 2012's Inu × Boku: Secret Service.

As always, with the current trend of anime with cancel culture and all, most people would see a couple with a sizable age gap and say: "This is not possible at all, cancel the anime!" To that I say, please remove your spectacles of criticism and see this from a different POV.

With that out of the way, this is just a very simple romance story between good and evil: the evil organization that's led by Mira to bring waste to Earth, and the faction of good that is always traditionally associated with: Mahou Shoujo i.e. Magical Girls, to protect the peace and harmony on the same planet, led by Byakuya Mimori. And you know what they say about first impressions in the romantic tense: "From the moment I saw you, I can't take my eyes off you. Shall we date?" Yelp, I just felt the cringe writing this sentence for the review, someone help me xD

Being in the Shoujo sense that's marketed as a Shonen work, I have to say that from the moment that Mira laid his eyes on Mimori, I am immediately smitten by their pure and unadulterated relationship, more than what the average Joe can only summarize of a disgusting love between a minor and an adult that it's just sick to imagine. To be fair, those of you who've watched or read Inu × Boku: Secret Service (which I will applaud you if you have done so) would have caught on that this is Cocoa Fujiwara's signature trait of the adults protecting the children, with the progression of the bond translating into a romantic relationship, and MahoAku is pretty much in the exact same ballpark as said series, only in a more sweet and diabetic way that most couples could ever dream of a enemies-to-lovers storyline, that the male MC just can't simply get over his crush so much so that it not only cost him his heart but also many pairs of glasses in the process, as predictable and excessive as it is to go crazy over her.

With both Mira and Mimori doing all they can to preserve their secret taboo of a relationship that must not be found out by their colleagues, it's definitely a battle to the very end if they're exposed. Moreover, the colleagues on either side...are not normal people at all, if ever concerned for trivial instances. Mira may be the evil Lieutenant, but he has colleagues ranging from the lazy Fomalhaut, the free and easy-going "couple" of Alcyone and Spica, as well as the yandere fantasizing of Bellatrix. And as if this crazy crowd of evil colleagues are the insanity that Mira can't exactly control, Mimori has it hard too with her Mr. Cat Familiar, who came to the world to assist her...or rather, request her to do things that should not be exposed to the innocent and purity of the young teenager girl who works odd jobs by day and night, and even with fellow Magical Girls in the form of Hibana Kagari with her Familiar of Betelgeuse, whom she can only swear as a form of itting her approval. God, I can't tell you how much of a comedic relief Hibana is being excessive in her vulgarism; that's her natural sense of speech, it always gets me laughing each and every time. This is a cast of characters that you will not want to get on their bad side, or they'll torment you with the tools of their choosing.

I'm actually very surprised that studio Bones was chosen for this side project, considering that aside from the staple that is My Hero Academia and the recent new seasons of Bungou Stray Dogs over the last 2 years or so (let's just forget about the mess that was Winter's underwhelming and studio-anniversary insulting Metallic Rouge), the studio is going all guns blazing on the complete adaptation of the popular Shonen series franchise that they've started since Spring 2016. Still, it's good to see some diversity with the studio adapting stuff like this, that shows the versatility of Bones with their last handful of great series from Vanitas no Carte and the recent conclusion of Mob Psycho 100. And I feel that MahoAku stands together with the other shows in Bones's biography quite well with its adaptation under female director Akiyo Ohashi, whose directorial works range only with the 2020 BL film of Umibe no Étranger a.k.a The Stranger by the Shore and the Given: Movie's OVA the year after. Even with less experience, this half-episode series is still notable because she has to make clear cut decisions to thread the unfinished manga that Cocoa Fujiwara left behind into the anime, and that's no easy feat to adapt and create both existing and original content that still feels like an open-and-shut case of consistency.

The music is a feels ride, not gonna lie. Lezel's half-episode OP song is one of the most beautiful and rhythmic songs I've heard this season and is such a perfect fit for a series like this. I can take it or leave it with the ED featuring both Miya and Mimori's VAs, but it's just decent.

The show being a great sign-off to the late female mangaka, I hope that she is able to see this work from Heaven, because this is a small lil' series that truly respects the work that goes behind not just the anime, but also paying the tribute with the foundation from the manga that's an honour to the loving memory of Cocoa Fujiwara.

MahoAku's a wholesome, cutesy, dramatic rom-com despite the age gap, without a shadow of ANY doubt.

I will be reviewing the entire series in a Non Spoiler Fashion, based on the Manga and the anime. The anime is an extremely faithful adaption so discussing the manga in my review is basically just reviewing the same content as the show. —Non Spoiler Review— Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku Wa Tekitai Shiteita, or Mahoaku as the fandom has taken to calling it, is the story of a magical girl, an evil lieutenant who has been forced to fight her, her cat like fairy partner, and the friends she makes along the way. I’m sure that when you hear me describe the show ... like that it sounds painfully generic: it probably sounds reminiscent to you of whichever magical girl anime you know (Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure, etc). But let me tell you that this series is extremely unique, and for a hardcore fan of the magical girl genre (such as myself), it completely blew my expectations out of the water. The first thing that makes MahoAko such a unique magical girl anime, is the way in which it flies in the face of the normal formula you would find in magical girl shows. Many magical girl shows follow what I like to call Monster of the Week formula, where the main character, the magical girl heroine, encounters an evil general, and fights against his/their monster. After that the general flees on his/their way running into the night after being defeated by the magical girl. This show completely abandons that formula basically as soon as it starts: we see in episode 1 what appears to be this same generic formula, as we meet Byakuya, the magical girl, and Miller, the Evil Lieutenant, who has sent a dragon to fight her. But, the show quickly changes directions completely, as the magical girl defeats the dragon in barely a single minute, and then, the evil General type character, is revealed to have actually fallen in love with her! This type of twist, of the monster fight actually not being very long or important, might remind you slightly of One Punch Man’s humor (and in fact, MahoAko is actually animated by the same studio as One Punch Man), but what makes this show stand out in comparison to One Punch, is the way that this subversion and this breaking of expectations is being applied to the magical girl genre. And also, the fact that, instead of being an action packed comedy, MahoAko revealed its true nature as a heartwarming romance. How many anime can you think of, which are presented at first like formulaic kids shows, and then have a subversive joke that changes the genre you expected, and then after that, transform into a ionate and heartwarming romance?? I am gonna guess you know of very few series like this, which makes MahoAko extremely unique!!
Now, I need to go into depth on one of the series more controversial elements which unfortunately is probably the reason this show is so unfairly underrated. You see, this series has a controversy surrounding the age gap of the main romance of the protagonists. This is something that is extremely frequently brought up because it’s very clear from the dialogue, backstory etc: the main couple of the magical girl and Miller is clearly a couple with a large difference in ages. It is clear Miller is quite older than the magical girl herself, Byakuya, because she is so much shorter than him and he also seems to have much more experience in life than her. In fact, in the manga the male lieutenant character Miller, even stated directly that he is a 27 year old man. You can see screenshots of this, within the discussion on the forum for this show titled “What is the Age Gap? Does anyone know?” Which was created by Ka_Kun_Moetan many months ago. So… uh yeah. I created that discussion: because at first I was genuinely concerned, that this might be a story between a little girl, and a grown man… Adding to this is the fact that we have no way to ask the Late Author herself, (and also I would argue it would be rude, to just suddenly ask her “hey what is the ages of your characters??” Even if we could it would be disrespectful imo). BUT, I want to say, this series completely shifted my perspective, convincing me of the wholesomeness of this romance, and much like it did in episode 1, breaking and subverting my expectations / judgements: I am no longer concerning myself with the discussion and if anything I regret making that discussion post because this series clearly deserves your : it’s very good. A large part of what convinced me to change my mind on this was another review posted of this show, from after its 4th episode. A NozomiCoco posted a review here which featured their thoughts on the show as well as a huge rebuttal to the controversy this show has been recieving on Twitter, making several extremely good points such as the fact that this show is not the first show to play up what looked like an age gap between the main romance (Sailor Moon also played up an age gap romance, with the anime having the boy be a college student instead of high school just so that he came off as older). And then of course there’s also the romance in shows like magical girl shows like Fullmoon which has an age gap, and also shows where there is a difference in ages because there’s a species difference, of a human girl and a non human being (such as Nozomi and Coco in Pretty Cure, or Elias and Chise in The Ancient Magus Bride).
In conclusion, this is a wholesome romance. Mahoako subverted my expectations and received a massive jump in score in my head, and I really feel you should give the series a chance! Give this series a try, and don’t let those hate mobs on Twitter who are posting that the show is gross, convince you of anything, because frankly those people seem to hate on everything.

It can be really hard to try and destroy everything in the world as an evil Lieutenant, when you fall in love with the enemy at first sight.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant is a romcom where we follow the Evil Lieutenant Mira and the Magical girl Mimori. They are enemies that start to develop a forbidden relationship, which is shown through some short episodes that highlight their ups and downs.

The plot for the show is very simple, and follows how Mira and Mimori go from enemies to forming a romantic relationship. This is ed by the whole aspect of it being a forbidden ... love and that the two of them come from completely different backgrounds. They also use some classic tropes, as plots for some of the episodes, but they are done with style and their own twists. All of it makes the plot generally seem like a very sweet little romance story.

For characters it is very limited how much time is spent on others then Mira and Mimori, since the show has short episodes. But even though side characters don't have much time to shine, is the show not afraid of giving them very bold personality traits and showing it off. When it comes to our main characters, do we get a slow but steady progression for them, where they very much carry the romance part of the show, while the side characters do most of the comedy aspect of the show. Which gives a nice balance between being overwhelmed by the cute moments and having a small laugh.

For the style of the show is it a more simplistic style, where most focus is on the characters and the background is less interesting. But they also have a very specific style throughout, which is their high use of pastel colors, this choice gives the show a calming effect to it and helps keep the story sweet and cutesy.

Overall each episode of this show is a quick shot of sweet and cutesy romance with a side of comedy. So if that is something you like or if you need something sweet and positive to watch, would i recommend you watch this show.

I went into it without knowledge of what had happened to the author or why the episodes were so short (12 min long give or take). Almost skipped it because of how short they were if I'm being honest but the fmc dragged me in just like how the Lieutenant got dragged in. She's adorable and that's always a good point I look for when it comes to these types of anime. I watched it in its entirety and I wanted more. Looking at comments I found out the author was no longer with us and that the manga didn't make it all that far.. ... Sadness.

I give it a 9/10. Barely ever give things a 10 so a 9 is as good as it gets. I'm sure not everyone will agree but I'm sucker for these types of anime/works. Not too mushy and not too stale. Just the right amount. If you are looking for a fully fleshed out story, again, the author ed and the story was basically in its starting point so there not exactly much story progression what's so ever other than the relationship between the magical girl and the evil lieutenant. I recommend regardless of this for those who enjoy romance with some comedy in it.

I aint really a fan of magical girls, not that i have watched more than i can count on one hand but this show is definitely down my alley.

Getting to watch the romance they act sure is funny, exciting and makes one want to ... see more of the two.

A slow falling in love story of a magical girl and an evil lieutenant, just like the title says, and it's done in a really good way.

Unfortunetaly, the author, Fujiwara Cocoa, ed away in 2015, at a young age of 31, and such the source material barely had 3 volumes worth of story to go off on, having to add new things to it as even the last "volume" was a really short one lacking enough chapters. But this, for me at least, adds a whole new nuance over the anime, as it was made after 9 years, like a tribute to the author. Even ... though the episodes were short and left you wanting way more, they were beautiful, both in art, music, vibe and presentation of the jokes/story. You can see and feel the love that was put in this anime, and the potential it had if the source material would have continued.

It is a short anime, so just go watch it like it is a movie of around 2 hours. It is a lovely story with a diverse cast of characters you wouldn't really expect in such a story, and the jokes they were making.... really caught me off guard quite a few times. They're adult jokes.

The only small problem, and this might/is more of a cultural difference, were the ages of the characters, that stuff put a bit of a bad taste in my mouth... but it is Japan, which just recently in 2023 raised the age of consent from 13 to 16, so yea, I can only see it as a difference in culture ig.

Story: 9 -- For what it was, it is a lovely story with really nice presentation. Nothing too deep, but it still is an unfinished story, so a lot of things are left open, albeit they aren't that important as this feel like a slice of life mostly.

Art: 10 -- The art is amazing! Really love this kind of art!

Music: 9 -- Fits really well with everything!

Characters: 10 -- Here the characters are diverse and some really caught me by suprise, maybe because I never really watched magical girls themed animes, but this anime is made for adults imho...

Enjoyment: 10 -- Had a grin troughout the whole watching of it

This review was a bit exaggerated in marks, but this is because I feel like this is an anime I will most likely rewatch, as it is a short and very sweet one that made me smile and laugh quite a bit. It is not perfect by any means, not a 10, but given its context and how and for what it was made, I feel like it deserves a 10.
Highly recommend this anime to anyone that wants to watch something light hearted, that will make you smile troughout all of 2 hours of watching the anime, laugh at jokes that are adult oriented, and all together want to see the last unfinished piece of an author's life and the love that was put in this tribute. Just go watch already, it's a short one! I bet you won't regret it!

Another series with a great potential yet ended in an unfortunate and tragic circumstances. It has been almost a decade since author had ed away and I wish that I could have wished to see more of the wholesome scenes and interactions between the two main characters but at least the anime ended on a high note, befitting as a tribute to the late author.
May her soul in heaven find eternal happiness, not just for Cocoa Fujiwara but also for all of the great authors that had recently ed away.

I watch the first episode and this series instantly got my attention a I caught up to where the anime is now.

It's a 10/10 to me. I love the romantic and wholesome relationship between Byakuya and Mira. I think the comedy is great too and it genuely made me laugh. It reminds me a lot of Kaguya-sama's comedy, with both of our protagonists falling in love but trying to stay loyal to their role.

I enjoy a lot how this series so far sets up deeper undertones behind all the comedy, just like the magical's girls traumatic past, her lonely life and else.

A very unique and ... wholesome romantic comedy with drama.

This entire anime feels like fan service in a box with a cute ribbon on top… and yes, I unfortunately loved every second of it and unfortunately want more! 😂 It’s quirky, it’s silly, and honestly, watching a half-bald human-angel-bird was not on my agenda today, but here we are! If you’re into romance anime with a wacky sense of humor, you’ll definitely want to give this a watch.

It’s saddening to hear that the anime wrapped up quickly, especially since the manga was only halfway done. Knowing that the creator has ed away makes it all the more bittersweet. I really wish the author could ... have seen how much love and happiness her work brought to so many people. 💖

Even though this anime will never get a second part and I know this is all that is left of this wonderful unfinished love story... it will live on in my dreams, and I will be sure to give them a happy fairy tale ending. ✨

Rest in peace Cocoa Fujiwara. If you were not aware, the author ed away nearly ten years before this aired, at the young age of 31. Sentimentality aside, I would still give this such a high rating for what it is…to think I almost skipped it. I am so glad I didn’t.

Anyway, it’s short, but still manages to convey a lot in the limited time. Sure, there’s ecchi, crudeness from the “Angel” and comedic profanity from the other magical girl, but those help to balance the absolute sweetness of the relationship between the Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant. If ... you can roll with that and like a sweet and simple romcom, this is perfect. They both love one another and meet every day and there’s little progression, but it’s evident by the end… and it perfectly accomplishes what it sets out to do. It certainly doesn’t ever feel like it’s dragging like many romcoms.

It’s hard to really put so much into so few episodes, but for example, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia did a great job in pulling me in and making me care...these episodes were half as long, but the tempo was great and didn’t suffer. Masterful storytelling and editing to fit the allotted time and still leave you satisfied without leaving you feeling either clueless or that there was too much “filler” or dragging things out. No… this was just right.

The ing cast gets just enough time to leave you wanting more of them and to get a basic grasp of their personalities- a testament to the writing and the talents of the VAs. The leads were phenomenal. You don’t get to see more, but you feel the depth is there.

The art and music were beautiful.

I can imagine a world where it keeps going and there are antics and more exploring of the various characters. Maybe we would meet the King. Maybe if it went on long enough, they would eventually progress farther or even marry and try to hide things or maybe it would end there or with the revelation that everyone already knew, or something more like in other stories… but we know we won’t get that and that’s ok because what we got was beautiful and ended on a perfect note with a heartwarming feeling of “see you tomorrow” like it was meant to. We can imagine those futures.

The fact it manages to stir so much feeling in 12 episodes of each less than 12 minutes makes it top-tier to me.
