Uchuu Senkan Tiramisù

Subaru Ichinose loves his cockpit as, to him, it's like being in his mother's womb. Whenever he struggles to converse with his fellow pilots, his cockpit is the one place he can be alone. As the ace pilot aboard the Tiramisu, Earth Union's most important battleship, it is his job to defend Mother Earth from the threats that emerge from humanity's extended dominion spreading throughout the vast reaches of the universe.

Armed with his personal mecha Durandal, Subaru must fend off encroaching foreign colonies as he struggles to protect his personal sanctuary from rogue fried pork skewers, suffocating backwards shirts, and unsolicited redecorations. In the year Space Age 0156, the fate of humanity rests entirely in his hands.

This show is the definition of hit-or-miss. I really enjoyed watching it, but it is absolutely absurd and nonsensical. A good portion of this show will leave you just "????????". While this show absolutely works best in its short episode form, I almost would have preferred it if the episodes were longer and the story was fleshed out more and more continuous. Although I don't know if that would make it better or worse. While the breakneck absurdist comedy is fantastic, there comes a point where its just too confusing and weird to follow. It doesn't ruin the comedy, but in a way it makes ... it slightly less impactful as you can't care as much for what is happening. Its still great, and extremely entertaining, but there are other things to also think about.

I turned this on at random, deciding to check out some new anime, and I watch the first episode. It is so incredibly bad, that I immediately head back to MAL, drop it, give it a bad score and start looking for something else to watch. I couldn't really settle on anything, and the second episode of this anime was still up on my tab, so I decide: "Meh, it's only 5 minutes. I'll give it one more chance.". I end up binging the entire thing in one sitting.

The first episode was absolutely terrible. I can see why this ... has only a mid 6 rating. I imagine many viewers saw the length, and the stupidity of an anime that seemed to focus on a guy trying to eat a bento in his cockpit, and decided to check out. But, after that stinker of a first episode, the anime really finds its footing and becomes absolutely hilarious. It's weird as hell, but it's absolutely hilarious.

If you like absurd and off the wall parodies, you'll love this if you give it a shot. It's about as absurd as it gets. The MC is pretty much mentally ill and struggling with OCD and Anti-Social disorder. As such, he's obsessed with staying in his cockpit as much as possible, because the rest of the crew irritates him. The story revolves around this and throws a series of bizarre plot drivers into each episode to make it interesting. There are talking pubes, giant space chihuahuas and back-of-the-hand rice. That makes no sense right? I agree. But, it's still funny as hell.

As funny as it is, being only a 7 minute episode scene (Really 5, minus the OP and EP) it clearly is going to have serious flaws. There's no plot to speak of. They try throwing a little into it midway, but it's pretty flimsy as plots tend to be in absurdist comedies. It's a space mecha anime, but don't expect great fights. There is some fighting, but the majority of the anime is focused on setting up the jokes. There's zero depth to the cast at all. All of them are pretty much cliches built for no other reason than to set up the jokes. Fortunately, the jokes are very funny.

This anime was truly a surprise for me, and I think if you can power past the first episode, you'll enjoy it. But, only if you think you'll enjoy an absurd gundam parody. If you haven't watched a lot of space mech animes, you should probably on this. You'll probably not get any of the comedy in this.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (4/13 eps)

I was never big into mobile suits, but didn't quite understand why. Upon watching Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu, I found the answer. They lack in aesthetics. Our main character decorated his with pink, heart-shaped goods and fluffy animals. For the first time ever, I have met a person who truly values his mecha and has made it personal. A real human beem. "This is my cockpit, there are many like it, but this one is mine." This is basically Forest Gump the anime. I can identify with.

Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu is an interesting comedy series which brings quite a few witty remarks and original topics on the ... table. These focus around such things as flaws and the generic nature of space operas and mecha anime. Parodying things like G-powers and the challenges of actually eating and drinking in zero gravity. The comedy is definitely well-thought and remind me of 'Thermae Romae', the world famous, award-winning manga series which also had similarly obscure ideas about bath houses. This time they are of course about space.

The episodes are only 7 minutes long. One can tell based to episode 1 if they will like this series or not, so I recommend anyone who is even mildly interested to give this a go.
