Kill la Kill

After the murder of her father, Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of his killer. Following her only lead—the missing half of his invention, the Scissor Blade—she arrives at the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other. The academy is ruled by the imposing and cold-hearted student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. In the school's brutally competitive hierarchy, Satsuki bestows upon those at the top special clothes called "Goku Uniforms," which grant the wearer unique superhuman abilities.

Thoroughly beaten in a fight against one of the students in uniform, Ryuuko retreats to her razed home where she stumbles across Senketsu, a rare and sentient "Kamui," or God Clothes. After coming into with Ryuuko's blood, Senketsu awakens, latching onto her and providing her with immense power. Now, armed with Senketsu and the Scissor Blade, Ryuuko makes a stand against the Elite Four, hoping to reach Satsuki and uncover the culprit behind her father's murder once and for all.

In a world where humanity is controlled or sacrificed for something greater than itself, the struggle of the protagonist along with her rebellious personality is what initially captivated me. Some may consider it too suggestive or even ''fetish content'' I think the story is one worth consuming, while I personally would argue that this tale goes beyond ''ecchi'' and uses the genre in an absurd but effective way to tell the story, as ''clothing'' (or the lack of) is one crucial element to the story that one can only fully understand by watching it. In other words, I believe that the ''ecchi'' is not the ... main genre nor focus but rather a narrative choice and a means to decorate the story.
It's funny, engaging, very VERY well pace and also touching... I recommend to anyone who likes themes of revenge, rebellion and of course to those who don't mind the ''gooner'' aspect of it.

Mixed Feelings

If I only had three words to describe "Kill la Kill" they would be: "Over-the-top," but since I don't only have three here are the rest. "Kill la Kill" is a seven out of ten show with ten out of ten moments, like whenever Mako is on-screen. Other strong points for the series include great character design and a great soundtrack. Aspects of the show that hold the series back include the fact that a lot of the twists do not feel foreshadowed at all yet are still kind of predictable. Also, while the animation quality was probably considered top tier at the time, it ... has not aged well. Some scenes kind of remind me of old screensavers on my neighbor's computer from when I was a kid. The "ecchi" nature of the show also does not go particularly well with the animation style, though the animation style is kind of necessary for every other aspect of the show.

At the end of the day, there's nothing that "Kill la Kill" did that "Gurren Lagann" did not do better unless you are really down bad for some ecchi. The show is more time capsule than timeless, but it certainly is not bad by any means.

What a waster, what a fucking waster ©
Idk how people find this anime entertaining. Does it comment on something like a good satire? Nope. Is it funny in dialogue or visual comedy like a good parody? Nope. Does the over-the-top action provide enough entertainment? Nah, it's repetitive. I don't want to call a stupid show stupid and write a whole essay ranting about it. Being a stupid, cheesy, wild-ride cringe show is fine. It can be delicious. But it's not a KLK case. It's just a boring waste.
Let me, a professional cringe enthusiast, tell you how to make a good cringe. It's simple - once ... you set a "trash bar," you can't lower it at any cost. Like in the Riki-Oh, where the level of insanity never drops. A grotesque gore killing evolves into an even more pathos-laden silly mass murder scene and action, the viewer never gets a chance to catch their breath. What about KLK? When a silly villain is beaten, all the tasty bits of young female flesh are shown and all the arguments are shouted, nothing happens. It just goes on and on in the same groove. Same jokes, same nudity, same action. And of course, the same expositional drama, as if anyone would care about a cheap clichéd revenge arc in the trash that was made for fun. So for me watching KLK was like chewing cheap gum - repetitive motion with the taste that wears off pretty fast.
